ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week 15

Player of the Week
Sunnie Diamond, Queens (So, G - Hiram, Ga.)
Diamond exploded for a career-high week averaging 30.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals totaling 60 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists, and four steals in two games. The sophomore began the week recording a double-double with a career-best 26 points and 10 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals against STAC. Three days later, Diamond would end the season tallying a new career-best of 34 points on 60.0 percent shooting with a career-high seven made three-pointers as the Knights defeated Mercy on Saturday afternoon.

Defensive Player of the Week
Justin Hemphill, Daemen (Jr, F - Buffalo, N.Y.)
Hemphill led the Wildcats to an 83-74 win over D'Youville in their regular season finale. He played 23 minutes off the bench, tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine (6 defensive), and also totaled three steals and a career-high six blocks. He made 10-of-14 shots and scored a career-high 24 points.

Rookie of the Week
James Chestnut, Staten Island (Fr, G - Watervliet, N.Y.)
Chestnut scored 17 points in CSI's only game this week against Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday. He added five rebounds and five assists in the Dolphins' win and did not miss a single shot finishing the game 5-for-5 from the field. This included a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in a 37-minute outing against the Redhawks.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Michael Aiken, Dist. Columbia (So, G - Washington, D.C.)
Aiken scored 19 points, shooting at 58.3 percent from the field to help lead the Firebirds to a season sweep of the Redhawks and hosting rights to the tournament quarterfinals. He also dished out six assists, three steals, and two rebounds.

Jayden Dewaal, Mercy (Jr, F - Toronto, Ontario)
Dewaal averaged a team-high-tying 16.5 points per game on 71.4 percent shooting with a team-high 11.5 rebounds per game (11.0 defensive) in a 1-1 week for Mercy. The junior opened the week with 17 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in the win over Molloy on Wednesday. The forward ended the week with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds at Queens on Saturday.

DeVante Jamison, St. Thomas Aquinas (Jr, G - Dorchester, Mass.)
Jamison averaged 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 9.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in two contests last week. The junior guard recorded 22 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and two steals against Queens, before posting a 13-point, eight-rebound, 11-assist, one-steal effort at Molloy.

Willie Kondrat, D'Youville (Gr, G/F - Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Willie Kondrat pulled out all the stops to conclude the Saints' final game of the season against Daemen University finishing with 32 points. Kondrat shot the ball at a stellar 90.9 percent from the charity stripe, 50 percent from behind the three-point line, and 50 percent from the field. This performance marks the fourth time this season that Kondrat has recorded 30 or more points.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: The Wildcats (19-7, 12-4 ECC) posted an 83-74 win over D'Youville Saturday and closed out the regular season with seven-straight wins. Daemen is seeded second in the upcoming ECC Championship. Daemen has won at least 19 games in 11 of the last 12 seasons. That span encompasses the end of Daemen's NAIA era, its NCAA transition period and the first eight seasons of full NCAA Division II membership. The Wildcats have won 72% of their contests, going 246-97 in that span. Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) closed out the regular season ranked second among all Division II players in three-point field goal percentage (.507).

District of Columbia: The Firebirds defeated Roberts Wesleyan to complete a season sweep and while securing the 4th place spot going into the ECC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday where they will host the College of Staten Island.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The Mercy College men's basketball team went 1-1 on the week with a win over Molloy and a loss to Queens. The Mavericks were led by junior Jayden Dewaal who averaged a double-double.

Molloy: The Lions ended the regular season with losses to Mercy and STAC to sit at 11-17 on the season and 10-6 in league play headed into the postseason tournament. Molloy will have the three-seed in the East Coast Conference Championship and face sixth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (Mar. 1) in Quealy Gymnasium for the right to face Daemen in the semifinal on Saturday (Mar. 4).

Queens: Men's Basketball went 1-1 on the week to conclude their 22-23 season. Led by sophomore Sunnie Diamond who averaged 30 points would record a career-best on two occasions. The first-year guard began recording his second double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds against STAC. Diamond would end his first season with a career-best 34 points on a career-high seven made three-pointers against Mercy College on Senior Day.

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts closed out the regular season with two road losses, dropping games to UDC and CSI. The Redhawks clinched the No. 6 spot in the ECC Championships and finished the season 9-15, 7-9 ECC.

Staten Island: The Dolphins played just one game this week and picked up a win over Roberts Wesleyan on Senior Day, 73-64. The team will face UDC in the opening round of the East Coast Conference Championship tournament on Wednesday.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (24-4, 15-1 ECC) swept a pair of contests last week, first beating Queens 76-74, then downing Molloy 94-70. STAC has earned the top seed, an opening round bye and hosting duties in the ECC Men's Basketball Tournament. Semifinal Action begins at Aquinas Hall on March 4 (12 p.m. & 3 p.m.) with the Final on March 5 (2:30 p.m.)
