ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week Five

Player of the Week
Messiah Mallory, Staten Island (So, C - Watervliet, N.Y.)
Mallory helped lead the Dolphins to a pair of victories last week behind a 29-point effort on Tuesday and a 21-point performance on Saturday. Against UDC on Tuesday he finished with 29 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 12-for-17 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. On Saturday against American International College, he scored another 21 points and grabbed another eight rebounds while once again shooting efficiently at 8-for-14 from the floor. For the week, he averaged 25.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game.

Defensive Player of the Week
DeVante Jamison, St. Thomas Aquinas (Jr, G - Dorchester, Mass.)
Jamison led the Spartans on the defensive end of the floor, compiling 10 rebounds and five steals over two games last week. The junior guard posted three rebounds against Daemen, before recording seven rebounds and five steals against D'Youville. He also helped the Spartans force 45 turnovers over the two games and contributed offensively as well, recording 23 and 12-point games.

Rookie of the Week
James Chestnut, Staten Island (Fr, G - Watervliet, N.Y.)
Chestnut was key in Tuesday's win over UDC with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 40 minutes. On Saturday, he battled foul trouble in a 10-assist effort to help the Dolphins past American International College in non-conference play. He finishes the week by stuffing the stat sheet to the tune of 8.5 points, 7.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game for a CSI team that won both games they played.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Darren Fergus, Molloy (So, G - Freeport, N.Y.)
Fergus was a dominant scoring force for Molloy this week, averaging 25.5 points per game, shooting at 47 percent from the field. The sophomore netted a career-high 32 points in the Lions' victory over Roberts Wesleyan, adding 12 rebounds for his second double-double to date. On the week, the guard also averaged 9.5 rebounds, four assists, and two steals per game.

Willie Kondrat, D'Youville (Gr, G/F - Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Kondrat went on a tear last week, averaging 21.3 points with his best outing coming from facing Mercy on Friday putting up a career-high of 30. In their previous game against St. Thomas Aquinas, Kondrat led the Saints scoring efforts by contributing 19 points, three steals, and four rebounds. During the week Kondrat recorded a free throw percentage of 93.8.

Andrew Mason, Daemen (Jr, G - Webster, N.Y.)
Connected on 11-of-18 three-pointers (61%) and averaged 20 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a 1-1 week. Tied Daemen's NCAA-era (2015-present) record for three-pointers in a game (7) and totaled a season-high 21 points in a 72-70 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas. Netted a team-high 19 points and also added five rebounds and four assists in a win over Mercy.

Ja'Kair Sanchez, Roberts Wesleyan (Jr, F - Syracuse, N.Y.)
Sanchez averaged 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game to help the Redhawks split their first two conference games. His best outing came in a win over Queens in which he tallied 20 points on 63.6 shooting while adding four rebounds and two steals.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: Daemen (4-5, 1-3 ECC) went 1-1 last week, suffering a 72-70 loss at St. Thomas Aquinas and posting an 86-62 win at Mercy. Daemen established season highs for points (86), field goals (33) and three-pointers (12) in the win over Mercy. Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) connected on 11-of-18 three-pointers over the two games and tied Daemen's NCAA-era (2015-present) record for three-pointers in a game (7) in the loss to STAC. As a team, the Wildcats connected on 23-of-50 (46%) three-pointers over the two games. Daemen begins a stretch of three straight non-conference games with home games against Clarion (Dec. 14) and Assumption (Dec. 17) this week.

District of Columbia: UDC fell to the College of Staten Island in a conference match up, which was their lone game of the week. They will head to Delaware next Wednesday to face Wilmington in a non conference match up.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The Mercy College men's basketball team went 0-3 on the week with losses to Chestnut Hill, D'Youville, and Daemen. The Mavericks were led by junior Jayden Dewaal who averaged a team-high-tying 15.0 points per game. Mercy resumes action on Saturday when they host Saint Michael's at 2 p.m.

Molloy: The Lions went 1-1 on the week, falling to East Stroudsburg University in non-conference play before improving to 3-0 in league play with a 77-69 victory over Roberts Wesleyan. This week Molloy will play Holy Family at home on Wednesday (Dec. 14) before a rematch with the Redhawks on Saturday (Dec. 17) in Rochester.

Queens: The Knights went 0-2 on the week as they fell to 4-6 overall. Senior Tyler Carey averaged 11.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks on the week as he recorded 22 points, 21 rebounds, and six blocks. Queens continues their homestand as they close out the fall with Saint Rose on Friday (Dec. 16) evening and St. Michael's on Monday (Dec. 19) evening.

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts Wesleyan was able to get its third straight victory with a win over Queens on Friday night, 73-67 but then fell to Molloy on Sunday, 77-69. The Redhawks will play on the road at Mercyhurst on Wednesday before taking on Molloy again at home on Saturday.

Staten Island: CSI Men's Basketball went 2-0 this week with victories over District of Columbia and American International. The Dolphins defeated the Firebirds behind 29 points from Messiah Mallory on Tuesday, and they came from behind to knock off the Yellow Jackets behind 21 more from Mallory and a late go-ahead three by Luis Armas on Saturday.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (9-1, 4-0 ECC) went 2-0 last week, beating Daemen 72-70 and D'Youville 85-74. STAC will next be in action on December 14 (5:00 p.m.) vs. Assumption and December 17 (3:00 p.m.) vs. Pace.
