ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week 11

Player of the Week
Darren Fergus, Molloy (So, G - Freeport, N.Y.)
Fergus led the Lions averaging 20.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.7 steals per game on the week. The guard scored his 1,000th career point in a 25-point performance in Molloy's win over Daemen, reaching the milestone in just 62 games. The sophomore ended the 2-1 week with a double-double against D'Youville, pulling down 13 rebounds to go with 25 points while dishing out eight assists.

Defensive Player of the Week
Tyler Carey, Queens (Sr, F - Bay Shore, N.Y.)
Carey averaged 11.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks as the senior recorded 22 points, 22 rebounds, and nine blocks on the week. Carey tallied his seventh double-double of the year with 10 points, 13 rebounds and matched a career-high six blocks in the Friday victory over D'Youville. On Sunday afternoon the senior recorded 11 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks against Daemen.

Rookie of the Week
Kyle Pulliam, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr, G - Silver Spring, Md.)
Pulliam averaged 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in the Spartans' last two contests. The freshman guard recorded nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists against UDC, before posting a 15-point, five-rebound, one-assist, two-steal, one-block effort at Staten Island.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Michael Aiken, Dist. Columbia (So, G - Washington, D.C.)
Aiken averaged 19.0 points, 5.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game in a 1-1 week for UDC. In the game against STAC, he led with a game-high 20 points while pulling four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. In the Firebirds' win over Mercy, he was one assist shy of a double-double with 18 points, nine assists, two rebounds, and two steals.

Messiah Mallory, Staten Island (So, C - Watervliet, N.Y.)
Mallory helped lead the Dolphins to a win over Mercy on Wednesday with a 25-point, 13-rebound double-double. He then scored another 17 points and blocked five shots in Saturday's loss to St. Thomas Aquinas. The CSI sophomore finished the week averaging 21.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 3.5 blocks per game across two contests. He also shot nearly 52 percent from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Sean Smith Jr., Mercy (Gr, F - Yonkers, N.Y.)
Smith Jr. averaged a team-high 26.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game on 48.6 percent shooting with 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in two games this week. The graduate student opened the week with 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals against Staten Island on Wednesday. The forward ended the week with a game-high and season-high 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting with seven threes, 10 rebounds and one steal at UDC on Saturday.

Antonio Vendola, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr, G - Fernandina Beach, Fla.)

Vendola averaged 18.0 points, 1.0 rebound, and 3.5 assists in two contests last week. The red-shirt senior guard recorded 18 points, one rebound, and two assists against UDC, before posting an 18-point, one-rebound, five-assist, one-steal effort at Staten Island.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: Daemen (13-7, 6-4 ECC) had its region-best seven-game winning streak snapped at Molloy Friday night and bounced back with a win at Queens Sunday. The Wildcats are 10-2 over their last 12 games. Senior guard Ryan Salzburg (Manlius, N.Y.) recorded his 200th career assist in the win over Queens. Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) played in his 100th collegiate game over the weekend. Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) has recorded a block in 19 of 20 games this year and is just two blocks shy of becoming the fifth player in program history to register 50 or more rejections in a season. Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) is three shy of 150 three-pointers for his career. The Wildcats are idle until this weekend when they host Staten Island (Feb. 3) and District of Columbia (Feb. 5).

District of Columbia: UDC went 1-1 on the week in league play, falling to STAC on the road during the week and then defeating Mercy at home on the weekend. In the game against Mercy, the Firebirds recorded their highest-scoring game since 2006. The Firebirds improve to 5-5 in league play. Next Up, UDC heads upstate to N.Y. for a two-game back-to-back road trip next weekend, kicking off with a match-up against D'Youville on Friday.

Mercy: The Mercy College men's basketball team went 0-2 on the week with losses to Staten Island and UDC. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Sean Smith Jr. who averaged a team-high 26 points per game. Mercy resumes action on Wednesday when they host Cheyney at 7 p.m.

Molloy: No team notes submitted.

Queens: Men's basketball went 1-1 on the week as sophomore Shamar Chester led the Knights averaging 17.0 points. Queens continues their homestand with a non-conference game against Dominican on Thursday evening before hitting the road in ECC play against Molloy Saturday afternoon.

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts Wesleyan did not play last week

Staten Island: The Dolphins went 0-2 on the week suffering a loss in non-conference play against Franklin Pierce on Tuesday and a loss in conference play against Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday. Both games saw the Dolphins attempt to come from behind late, but the Dolphins ultimately fell short in both contests.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (19-3, 10-0 ECC) went 2-0 last week, beating UDC (100-74) and Staten Island (103-62). STAC will next be in action on February 1 at Roberts Wesleyan (7:30 p.m.)
