ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week Eight

Player and Rookie of the Week
James Chestnut, Staten Island (Fr, G - Watervliet, N.Y.)
Chestnut was a standout in both games the Dolphins played this past weekend as he scored a career-high 27 points in Friday's game against Daemen and added 21 more on Sunday to lead CSI in scoring in their victory over D'Youville. He shot an incredibly efficient 12-for-19 on Friday and 7-for-8 on Sunday while averaging 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game across the two contests. He played the full 40 minutes on Friday as well, the seventh time this season he has played an entire game.

Defensive Player of the Week
Justin Hemphill, Daemen (Jr, F - Buffalo, N.Y.)
Hemphill helped Daemen limit its two opponents to 40.0 (50-125) field goal percentage and an average of 63 points during a 2-0 week. He grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds (9 defensive) during the week and also contributed four blocks and two steals. Totaled 10 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 17 minutes off the bench in a 79-75 win at Staten Island.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Dylan Fasoyiro, Daemen (Jr, G - Houston, Texas)
Led Daemen to wins over regionally-ranked Franklin Pierce and Staten Island last week. Shot 48 percent (13-27) from the field and totaled 38 points, 13 rebounds, four steals, and three assists over the two games. Made 10-of-17 shots overall and 4-of-5 from three-point land and scored a career-high 31 points in a 79-75 win at Staten Island.

Darren Fergus, Molloy (So, G - Freeport, N.Y.)
Fergus averaged a double-double on the week with 19 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, rounding out his stat line with 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. In the victory over Queens, the guard led all scorers with 22 points on seven field goals and seven free throws. Against Bloomfield, the sophomore put up 16 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season while dishing out six assists.

Hartnel Haye, Dist. Columbia (So, F - Camden, N.J.)
Haye packed the stat sheet in the Firebirds' win over D'Youville. He scored a season-high 20 points, shooting at 63.6 percent from the field while pulling down five rebounds, five steals, and four assists.

James Patterson, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr, F - Richmond, Va.)
Patterson averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in the Spartans' last two contests, both wins. The freshman forward recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and two steals against Jefferson, before posting a 25-point, six-rebound, one-assist, and one-steal effort against Roberts Wesleyan. He also shot 59.0 percent from the field over the two matchups.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: Daemen (8-6, 2-3 ECC) has won five of its last six games and posted road wins over regionally-ranked Franklin Pierce and Staten Island last week. Daemen leads the ECC in team defense (65.4 papg) and has limited five of its last six opponents to less than 70 points. Daemen went 10-of-16 from three-point land in the win over Staten Island and has made 10 or more three-pointers six times this season. The Wildcats close out non-conference play by hosting Assumption on Monday (Jan. 9) and host rival Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday (Jan. 11).

District of Columbia: UDC went 1-0 on the week, to kick off the New Year with a 97-79 win over D'Youville University. Next up they will head to N.Y. to face off against Molloy University on Wednesday.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The Mercy College men's basketball team went 0-1 on the week with an overtime loss to Roberts Wesleyan on Friday. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Sean Smith Jr. who had a season-high 23 points. Mercy resumes action on Wednesday when they play at STAC at 7 p.m.

Molloy: The Lions went 1-1 on the week, topping Queens College in league play, 72-65, before falling to Bloomfield in non-conference action, 92-83. Molloy will continue ECC competition this week against the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday (Jan. 11) and the College of Staten Island on Saturday (Jan. 14).

Queens: Men's Basketball went 0-2 on the week falling to Molloy and Cheyney. Queens returns to ECC play as they host Staten Island Wednesday before concluding the week at UDC Saturday afternoon.

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts (5-8, 3-2 ECC) went 1-1 in its first two games back from winter break. The Redhawks grabbed an overtime win over Mercy (91-88) but lost to STAC (108-70). RWU will travel to Daemen on Wednesday and host D'Youville on Saturday.

Staten Island: The Dolphins split a pair of games against the conference this week losing to Daemen on Friday and defeating D'Youville on Sunday. On Friday, JJ Chestnut scored a career high 27 points as the Dolphins came up just short against the Wildcats. On Sunday, Chestnut scored 21 more and Messiah Mallory registered a 20-point, 13-rebound double-double.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (14-2, 5-0 ECC) went 2-0 last week, winning contests against Jefferson (72-69) and Roberts Wesleyan (108-70). STAC will next be in action on January 11 (7:30 p.m.) vs. Mercy and January 14 (3:00 p.m.) vs. Saint Anselm.
