ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week 14

Player of the Week
Chris Velasquez, Staten Island (Sr, G - Staten Island, N.Y.)
Velasquez continued an incredible final month of his senior season with another career high in scoring on Wednesday. He scored 35 in the game against New Haven and added 21 more on Saturday at UDC to average 28.0 points per game on the week. He shot an incredibly efficient 53.3 percent from the floor across two games and connected on nearly 64 percent of his threes. In addition to his scoring, he also contributed an average of 3.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.

Defensive Player of the Week
Justin Hemphill, Daemen (Jr, F - Buffalo, N.Y.)
Hemphill totaled a team-high 17 rebounds (14 defensive), two blocks, and a team-high five steals in a 2-0 week despite averaging just 19 minutes off the bench. He led the Wildcats to a big win over league-leading STAC, as he was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and totaled a career-high 21 points and team-high nine rebounds in just 21 minutes of the bench. Hemphill also collected three steals against the Spartans. He made 12-of-13 shots and averaged 14.0 points and 8.5 rebounds over the two games and headed up a defense that limited STAC and Mercy to a combined 34 percent (38-for-113) from the field overall and 19 percent (8-42) from three-point land. Hemphill also helped Daemen hold STAC to a season-low 57 points and Mercy to just 51 points.

Rookie of the Week
James Patterson, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr, F - Richmond, Va.)
Patterson averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 0.5 assists, and 1.0 steals in two contests last week. The freshman forward recorded 13 points and seven rebounds against Daemen, before posting a 21-point, seven-rebound, one-assist, two-steal effort at D'Youville.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Michael Aiken, Dist. Columbia (So, G - Washington, D.C.)
Aiken came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points to lead the Firebirds to an important conference victory over Staten Island. He shot at a season-high 80 percent from the field and 75 percent from behind the arc. He was one rebound shy of a double-double pulling down nine boards, while posting five assists and two steals.

Rian Carter, Roberts Wesleyan (Gr, G - Rochester, N.Y.)
Carter helped the Redhawks clinch a berth in the ECC Championship with a 24 point performance in a win over Queens. He added three assists and shot 53.3 percent on the afternoon. 

Sunnie Diamond, Queens (So, G - Hiram, Ga.)

Diamond averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.5 steals as the sophomore recorded 39 points on 51.7 percent shooting to go with nine rebounds, four assists, and five steals in two games. Diamond began the week recording 17 points against Wilmington on Wednesday evening before tallying his fifth 20-point performance with a team-high 22 points on 58.3 percent shooting with five rebounds and two steals against Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday evening.

Hartnel Haye, Dist. Columbia (So, F - Camden, N.J.)
Haye posted another double-double (his fourth of the season), scoring 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. He also had four assists and two steals and shot 53.3 percent from the field.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: Daemen (18-7, 11-4) extended its winning streak to six games following wins over league-leading STAC (83-57) and Mercy (82-51). The Wildcats have won 15 of their last 17 games. Daemen is outscoring its opponents by 22 points and is shooting 55 percent (188-342) from the field overall and 48.5 percent (63-130) from three-point land during its six-game winning streak. Head coach Mike MacDonald coached his 250th game at Daemen on Sunday. He has posted a 177-73 (.708) record in his nine seasons at Daemen. Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) is shooting 60 percent from three-point land during the six-game winning streak and ranks second nationally in three-point field goal percentage on the year at 51 percent (72-142). Daemen closes out the regular season Saturday at home against D'Youville.

District of Columbia: UDC defeated the College of Staten Island, to extend their win streak to 3 and keeping their hopes of hosting the quarterfinals alive. They have now won their last 7-10 games and have surpassed their season wins from last year by two. They look to secure their hosting spot welcoming Roberts Wesleyan on Thursday in their regular season finale.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The Mercy College men's basketball team went 1-1 on the week with a win over D'Youville and a loss to Daemen. The Mavericks were led by junior Jayden Dewaal who led the team in scoring and rebounding. Mercy resumes action on Wednesday when they host Molloy at 7 p.m.

Molloy: The Lions were idle this week. The team will conclude the regular season with contests at Mercy (Feb. 22) and against St. Thomas Aquinas (Feb. 25).

Queens: MBB went 0-2 on the week falling to Wilmington and Roberts Wesleyan. The Knights enter the last week of the regular season and will need to go 2-0 on the week to earn the sixth seed.

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts got a 95-81 win over Queens in the final home game of the regular season. The Redhawks improved to 9-13, 7-7 ECC and will head to UDC and CSI for the final two games of the regular season.

Staten Island: The Dolphins lost twice this week first falling to New Haven on Wednesday. The Dolphins then had a chance to clinch a playoff berth on Saturday but could not get past UDC and suffered a 10-point loss.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (22-4, 13-1 ECC) split a pair of contests last week, first falling to Daemen 83-57, then beating D'Youville 93-71. STAC will close out its regular season schedule by hosting Queens on February 22 (7:30 p.m.), then visiting Molloy on February 25 (2:00 p.m.).
