Spartans Win Streak Snapped in 83-57 Loss at Daemen

Amherst, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end, as the Spartans were upended by Daemen University, 83-57 on Friday evening at Lumsden Gymnasium.

STAC falls to 21-4 overall and 12-1 in the ECC with the loss, while Daemen improves to 17-7 and 10-4.

DeVante Jamison led the way for the Spartans, recording 18 points, while teammates James Patterson (13 points) and Antonio Vendola (11 points) also recorded double-digit point totals.

STAC shot 31.6 percent from the field (18-57), while Daemen shot 65.3 percent (32-49) from the floor and 52.9 percent (9-17) from three.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven Spartans recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the maroon and gold with three assists on the evening.
  • Jamison made 6 of his 14 field goal attempts, while James Patterson went 4-for-9 from the floor.
  • Daemen outrebounded STAC 36-27, with James Patterson grabbing a team-high seven boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 11 steals, with the Wildcats turning the ball over on 24 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned one advantage in the team statistical category over Daemen: Second Chance Points (12-8).
  • The game featured four ties and four lead changes.
  • STAC failed to reach the 60-point mark for the first time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • STAC opened an early 5-2 lead, as a James Patterson layup and DeVante Jamison three go the offense going for the maroon and gold.
  • However Daemen answered back and immediately after a Patterson dunk made it 7-4, a Wildcats trey tied things at 7-7 with 15:48 to play before halftime.
  • Four straight points by the hosts gave them an 11-7 advantge.
  • STAC got within three points (15-12), but Daemen went on a 12-0 run to lead 27-12 with just under seven minutes left in the half.
  • Despite the Spartans finding ways to score, the Wildcats also continued increase its lead, with each side scoring 16 points over the final 6:25 of the stanza. 
  • Daemen took a 43-28 advantage into the locker room at the break.
  • James Patterson paced the Spartans offense with eight first-half points, while Nick MacDonald, Joey Atkins and Justin Hemphill led all scorers with nine points apiece for the Wildcats.
  • When the teams returned to the hardwood for second-half action, it would take two plus minutes for anyone to register a point. James Patterson broke the stalemate with a pair of free throws to cut the STAC deficit to 13, at 43-30.
  • A 9-2 streak by Daemen brought the margin on the scoreboard to 20 (52-32) with 15:26 left to play in regulation.
  • Double digit leads continued for the Wildcats, with their largest advantage reaching 31 points (79-48) with 3:07 to play.
