ECC Women's Basketball Report - Week 15

Player of the Week
Alexa Huertas, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr, G - Haverstraw, N.Y.)
Huertas averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in two contests last week. The senior guard recorded 24 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals against Queens, before posting an 11-point, four-rebound, one-assist, one-steal effort at Molloy.

Defensive Player of the Week
Sarah Ericson, St. Thomas Aquinas (So, G - Norwich, Conn.)
Ericson led the Spartans on the defensive end of the floor, compiling 30 rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots over two games last week. The sophomore guard posted 19 rebounds, one steal, and one block against Queens, then picked up 11 rebounds, two steals, and a block at Molloy, She also recorded seven and 14-point games against her opponents.

Rookie of the Week
Brianna Davis, Queens (Fr, G - Bronx, N.Y.)
In two games, Davis averaged 16.0 points, and 5.0 rebounds as the rookie recorded 32 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and one block. Davis tallied 20 points with four rebounds against STAC before ending the regular season with 12 points and six rebounds with two steals against Mercy on Saturday afternoon.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Paige Emborsky, Daemen (Gr, G - Newfane, N.Y.)
Daemen graduate student Paige Emborsky led all shooters with 18 points in Daemen's 70-53 Senior Night win over D'Youville on Saturday. Emborsky shot 56-percent (5-of-9) from the field and knocking down four three point field goals as well as a perfect four of four from the stripe. The guard tallied an assist, one rebound and a block. On the season, Emborsky has scored double-digit points in 13 of Daemen's 22 games, and leads all Wildcat shooters, putting up an average of 11.8 ppg.

Shanell Haskins, Dist. Columbia (So, G - Bowie, Md.)
Haskins scored a game and season-high 24 points off of 53 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent shooting from behind the arc. She knocked down six threes while pulling four boards and dishing out two assists and a steal to help lead the Firebirds to victory over Roberts Wesleyan (for the first time since the 2015-16 season).

Latavia Jackson, Dist. Columbia (Jr, G - Waldorf, Md.)
Jackson posted a double-double off 12 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the Firebirds to a win over Roberts Wesleyan. She also made a career high 7 steals and dished out three assists and a block to help hold the Redhawks to just 47 points.

Kellie Nudd, Mercy (Sr, F - Colchester, Conn.)
Nudd averaged a team-high 16.5 points per game on 50.0 percent shooting with 5.0 rebounds per game as Mercy went 2-0 on the week. The senior opened the week with 10 points and four rebounds in the Senior Night win over Molloy on Wednesday. The forward ended the week with a season-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting with six rebounds in the win at Queens on Saturday.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: The Daemen University women's basketball team rounded out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 70-53 win over D'Youville. After securing the one seed in the ECC playoffs, the Wildcats will host the semifinals and championship at Lumsden Gymnasium on Saturday and Sunday.

District of Columbia: The Firebirds had arguably their best defensive game of the season, defeating Roberts Wesleyan 64-47. They pulled down a conference season game-high 57 rebounds and will host the College of Staten Island on Wednesday in the tournament quarterfinals.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The Mercy College women's basketball team went 2-0 on the week with wins over Molloy and Queens. The Mavericks were led by senior Kellie Nudd who averaged a team-high 16.5 points per game. Mercy resumes action in the ECC Tournament on Wednesday, March 1st at 7 p.m. against Queens at Mercy.

Molloy: No team notes submitted.

Queens:  Women's Basketball went 0-2 on the week they fell to STAC and Mercy. Rookie Brianna Davis averaged 16.0 points, and 5.0 rebounds as she recorded 32 points, and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and one block. The Knights return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 1) as they return to postseason play for the first time since the 2017-18 season against Mercy College.

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts finished the 2022-2023 season with a 4-19 overall record and 3-13 record in the conference. The Redhawks dropped a pair of road games to UDC and CSI to close out the regular season.

Staten Island: The Dolphins erased a 17-point deficit and forced overtime in their first game of the week against Chestnut Hill, but they came up short and ultimately lost by ten. On Saturday, they bounced back and clinched the first Division II playoff berth in the history of the program by defeating Roberts Wesleyan 64-58.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team (20-7, 12-4 ECC) swept a pair of contests last week, first beating Queens 69-46, then downing Molloy 71-48. STAC has earned the #2 seed and an opening round bye in the ECC Women's Basketball Tournament. Semifinal Action begins at Lumsden Gymnasium (Daemen University) on March 4 (12 p.m. & 3 p.m.) with the Final on March 5 (12 p.m.)
