ECC Men's Soccer Report - Week Nine

Offensive Player of the Week
Michael Hofmann, Molloy (Fr, F - Centereach, N.Y.)
Hofmann was at the center of the Molloy offensive attack in the ECC regular season finale against D'Youville. The freshman collected his first career goal against the Saints, then added on for his first career hat-trick, scoring three goals in a seven-minute span.

Defensive Player of the Week
Martin Penafiel, Mercy (So, B - Santiago, Chile)
Penafiel scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute in the Mavericks 1-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Tuesday and helped lead a Mercy defense that posted their eighth shutout of the season.

Rookie of the Week
Oscar Garces, Queens (Fr, F - Centereach, N.Y.)
With 92 seconds remaining until halftime, Garces snuck a cross from Nicolas Cifuentes Diaz with a right foot flick to beat the Spartans goalie on his left side to knot the game 1-1. It was the first goal of the Garces' collegiate career as Queens defeated STAC Saturday afternoon 2-1.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Santiago Gordillo Martinez, Dist. Columbia (So, F - Lima, Peru)
Martinez had three points on a goal and an assist to help the Firebirds to a 1-0-1 week. He scored in the Firebirds' 4-1 win over Dominican and then assisted the game-tying goal against Staten Island.

Marcos Lerma Escobar, Daemen (Gr, GK - Zaragoza, Spain)
Stopped all five shots he faced to lead Daemen to a 1-0 win over Slippery Rock in his only action of the week. Helped the Wildcats post their first win over a PSAC school since 2018.

Adolfo Martinez Paquet, Queens (So, M - Sevilla, Spain)
Paquet tallied his conference-leading sixth game-winner of the season as Queens rallied back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat STAC 2-1 Saturday afternoon. The sophomore converted his fifth PK of the year as the Sevilla native scored his team-leading ninth goal to help the Knights a postseason spot and the most wins in a single season as the Knights earned their 12th win of the year.

J.P. Rodriguez, Molloy (Sr, F - Queens, N.Y.)
Rodriguez netted a pair of goals in Molloy's, 6-0, win against D'Youville, including the game-winning goal.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: Daemen went 1-0-1 last week and is unbeaten in its last three games. Daemen played two teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference last week. The Wildcats battled Lock Haven to a 1-1 draw and posted a 1-0 win over Slippery Rock. The win over SRU marked Daemen's first win over a PSAC school since the 2018 season. Daemen was 0-2-1 against PSAC schools this year and had gone 0-14-1 against the league dating back to September of 2018. The Wildcats are one win shy of tying the program record for wins in a season (7) set in 2005, 2006 and 2017. The Wildcats will travel to the College of Staten Island for a key ECC game Wednesday, before closing out the regular season by host District of Columbia on Saturday.

District of Columbia: UDC went 1-0-1 on the week. They defeated Dominican College 4-1 in their last non-conference game of the season, then went on to tie with Staten Island 1-1 in conference play. Next up, the Firebirds will travel to N.Y. to face off against Daemen in their last game of the season.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The No. 18 Mercy College men's soccer team went 1-0 on the week with a win over East Stroudsburg on Tuesday. The Mavericks were led by sophomore Martin Penafiel who scored the game-winning goal. Mercy resumes action on Wednesday when they play at Bridgeport at 4 p.m.

Molloy: Molloy went 1-1 on the week. Falling to Millersville, 2-0, Wednesday, October 19, and defeated D'Youville, 6-0, Saturday, October 22. With the victory over the Saints, the Cardinal and White clinched the top spot in the East Coast Conference Championship. The Lions will conclude the regular season at Georgian Court Friday, October 28.

Queens: The Knights went 1-0 on the week with a 2-1 comeback victory over STAC Saturday afternoon. Queens concludes the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 29) evening as they welcome fellow CUNY member CSI Dolphins to Flushing.

Roberts Wesleyan: The Roberts men's soccer team tied its one game of the week to Salem University, 1-1. The 7-4-4 Redhawks head to Mercy for the final game of the regular season.

Staten Island: The Dolphins opened a critical three-game stretch of conference games to end the season against the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday.  Able to clinch a playoff spot with wins in all three games, the Dolphins settled for a 1-1 draw against the Firebirds.  Coming up this week, the Dolphins host Daemen University on Wednesday and wrap up their season against Queens on Saturday.  CSI remains alive in the playoff hunt with two games remaining, but they must win both matches to have a chance at the postseason.

St. Thomas Aquinas: St. Thomas Aquinas (5-6-4, 1-3-3 ECC) went 0-1-0 on the week, falling to UDC 2-1. STAC closes out its 2022 regular season schedule, hosting D'Youville on October 29 (1:00 p.m.).
