ECC Men's Soccer Report - Week One

Offensive Player of the Week
Jorge Umana, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr, F - Orangeburg, N.Y.)
Umana tallied four goals in the Spartans' 7-0 season-opening victory over Saint Michael's College. Umana took six total shots with five going on frame.

Defensive Player of the Week
Benjamin Van Buren, Mercy (Sr, B - Anderson, S.C.)
Van Buren scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute in the Mavericks' season-opening 2-1 win over Saint Rose on Thursday. The senior helped lead a backline that allowed just one goal in two games.

Rookie of the Week
Riccardo Boscolo Bachetto, Daemen (Fr, F - Chioggia, Italy)
Boscolo Bachetto scored two goals, including the game-winner, in his collegiate debut to lead Daemen to a 3-1 victory over St. Michael's in its 2022 season opener. It marked the first time since the 2014 season the Wildcats have opened the season with a victory.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Mateo Bacigalupo, Mercy (Fr, F - Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Bacigalupo scored the game-winning goal in the 12th minute of action in the Mavericks' 1-0 win over New Haven on Sunday.

Giovanni Campero, Dist. Columbia (So, M - Gaithersburg, Md.)
Campero picked up four points on the week dishing out an assist, in their 3-0 victory over Shepherd. He then went on to score a goal and an assist in the 3-2 win over Seton Hill.

Santiago Gordillo Martinez, Dist. Columbia (So, F - Lima, Peru)
Gordillo Martinez scored a goal in both games to help the Firebirds to a 2-0 record on the week.

Ado Martinez Paquet, Queens (So, M - Sevilla, Spain)
Paquet tallied his first game-winner of the season as he blasted a shot from 30 yards out to give Queens a 2-1 victory over Bentley for their win of the season.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen:  The Wildcats opened their 2022 season with a 3-1 victory over St. Michael's. It marked the first time since the 2014 season that Daemen has opened the year with a win. Freshman forward Riccardo Boscolo Bachetto scored two goals, including the game-winner, in his collegiate debut. The Wildcats continue their season-opening four-match home stand with non-league games against Malone and Walsh this week.

District of Columbia:  UDC Men's Soccer opened up their season with a 2-0 record, after defeating Shepherd University, 3-0, on Thursday and Seton Hill, 3-2, on Sunday. Next up The Firebirds will host West Chester University on Wednesday, before traveling to American Int'l on Saturday.

D'Youville:  The D'Youville University men's soccer team went 0-2 last week, falling to Malone University and Felician University. Felipe Santos paced the Saints offensively with two goals. Ethan Picard recorded a career-high 13 saves against Felician, recording 19 saves in two games.

Mercy:  The Mercy College men's soccer team went 2-0 on the week with wins over Saint Rose and New Haven. The Mavericks were led by senior Benjamin Van Buren and freshman Mateo Bacigalupo who both scored game-winning goals. Mercy resumes action on Wednesday, August 31st when they play at Adelphi at 7 p.m.

Molloy: No team notes submitted.

Queens:  The Knights went 1-1 to open the season as Leo Pinto and Adolfo Martinez Paquet scored the first two goals of the 2022 season in the 2-1 victory over Bentley Saturday evening. Queens will use the week to prepare for two non-conference matches as they host Chestnut Hill Wednesday evening before hitting the road for their first away match of the season against SNHU Saturday afternoon.

Roberts Wesleyan: The Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team hosted the University of Findlay last Thursday for its season opener. The Redhawks scored the first goal of the game, but two unanswered goals by Findlay led to a 2-1 loss. Roberts will travel to Saint Michael's on Tuesday and then host Walsh on Thursday and Malone on Saturday.

Staten Island: No team notes submitted.

St. Thomas Aquinas: St. Thomas Aquinas (1-0) opened its 2022 season with a 7-0 victory over Saint Michael's. Jorge Umana tallied four goals, while Kevon Evans scored twice and picked up an assist. STAC resumes play on August 30 at Franklin Pierce (3 p.m.) and then opens its home schedule vs. Nyack on September 3 (12 p.m.).
