ECC Men's Soccer Report - Week Three

Offensive Player of the Week
David Oprea, Queens (Fr, F - Oslo, Norway)
Oprea led the way with five points in the Knights' 2-0 week. The rookie tallied his first collegiate goal and assisted on another in the 4-1 victory over Jefferson Wednesday evening. In the ECC opener against D'Youville, the Norwegian notched his first game-winner of the season as he completed a cross from junior Leo Pinto in the 1-0 win Saturday afternoon.

Defensive Player of the Week
Dario Cruz, Queens (Sr, GK - Guadalajara, México)
Cruz made nine saves in the Knights' 2-0 week. The Guadalajara native made six saves in the 4-1 victory over Jefferson to earn the 11th victory of his career and moved up to the third in the All-Time Career Wins record. In a 1-0 ECC victory over D'Youville, Cruz made three saves to help the Knights earn their first shutout win of the season.

Rookie of the Week
Roman Capucha, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr, B - Bratislava, Slovakia)
Capucha tallied the first two goals of his collegiate career in STAC's 3-3 draw with Chestnut Hill last week. Capucha scored back-to-back goals against the Griffins to help lead the rally back from a 3-0 disadvantage in the match.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Gio Fabiano, Molloy (So, F - Carle Place, N.Y.)
In a 1-0-1 week for Molloy, Fabiano netted two goals on two shots and totaled four points off the bench.

Dylan Ruiz, Roberts Wesleyan (Sr, F - Mexico City, Mexico)
In a wild 5-5 tie against St. Thomas Aquinas, Ruiz tallied two goals and one assist for five points. After STAC scored five unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead, Ruiz would score twice in the final 3:37 to help the Redhawks earn a tie. 

Jorge Umana, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr, F - Orangeburg, N.Y.)
Umana recorded two goals and an assist over two matches last week, as STAC picked up two road draws against Chestnut Hill and Roberts Wesleyan.

Benjamin Van Buren, Mercy (Sr, B - Anderson, S.C.)
Van Buren played all 180 minutes in two games helping lead a Mercy backline that produced a pair of shutouts against AIC and Daemen and surrendered just one shot on goal in two games.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: The Wildcats (2-1-1, 0-1-0 ECC) suffered a 1-0 loss to regionally-ranked Mercy in their lone game last week. The Mavericks netted the game-winner with less than five minutes to play in the second half. Daemen has allowed just one goal in each of its first four games. The Wildcats are off to their best start since 2010 when they opened 3-1-0. Daemen plays at nationally-ranked Mercyhurst Wednesday and travels to Queens for an ECC game Saturday.

District of Columbia:  The Firebirds split the week 1-1, defeating ESU 2-0 at home before falling to Slippery Rock, 0-1 on the road. UDC is back in action on Wednesday and Saturday to host Gannon and open up ECC play against Roberts Wesleyan.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The RV Mercy College men's soccer team went 2-0 on the week with wins over AIC and Daemen. The Mavericks were led by senior Vasco Baptista who scored the game-winning goal in the win over Daemen. Mercy resumes action on Wednesday when they host Jefferson at 3 p.m.

Molloy: The Lions went 1-0-1 on the week. The Lions netted two goals in the second half against Felician on Tuesday, September 7 to tie the Golden Falcons. In their ECC opener against CSI, Molloy collected their second shutout of the season en route to a 2-0 victory over CSI.

Queens:  The Knights went 2-0 on the week as rookie David Oprea and Leo Pinto led the offense in a 5-1 offensive week. Queens returns to non-conference at SCSU on Wednesday evening before hosting Daemen in ECC play Saturday afternoon.

Roberts Wesleyan: The Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team went 0-1-1 last week, dropping a midweek game to Saint Anselm on the road and tying STAC in the ECC opener at home. The Redhawks will be on the road this week as they travel to Seton Hill and UDC.

Staten Island: No team notes submitted.

St. Thomas Aquinas: St. Thomas Aquinas (2-1-2) went 0-0-2 on the week, picking up draws against Chestnut Hill (3-3) and Roberts Wesleyan (5-5). Jorge Umana and Roman Capucha registered multi-goal weeks. STAC hosts East Stroudsburg on September 13 (2:30 p.m.) and Molloy on September 17 (2:00 p.m.).
