ECC Men's Soccer Report - Week Five

Offensive Player of the Week
Gio Fabiano, Molloy (So, F - Carle Place, N.Y.)
The Lions continued conference play this week, going 2-0 overall with Fabiano as a key contributor to the Molloy attack. The sophomore netted three goals on the week. He netted two goals in the win over UDC including the game-winner and scored the game-tying goal in the Lions come-from-behind win over No. 23 Mercy.

Defensive Player of the Week
Marcos Lerma Escobar, Daemen (Gr, GK - Zaragoza, Spain)
Registered five saves en route to his first solo shutout of the year in a 3-0 non-league win at Chestnut Hill.

Rookie of the Week
Axel Gamez, Dist. Columbia (Fr, M - Rockville, Md.)
Gamez had four points on one goal and two assists on the week. He scored the Firebirds' lone goal (his first collegiate goal) in a loss to Molloy and then went on to assist both goals in UDC's 2-1 win over D'Youville.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Vasco Baptista, Mercy (Sr, M - Alges, Portugal)
Baptista had a team-high-tying four points on a goal and two assists in two games. The senior opened the week with the game-winning goal in the win over Queens on Wednesday and also added an assist. Baptista ended the week with an assist in the Mavericks game at Molloy on Saturday.

Ryan Dobson, Molloy (Jr, B - Liverpool, England)
Dobson played a key role in Molloy's upset win over No. 23 Mercy. The junior dished out an assist on the game-tying goal and netted the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to close out the come-from-behind win.

Nicholas Kishenko, Staten Island (So, B/F - Staten Island, N.Y.)
Kishenko tallied a goal in the Dolphins' 5-2 loss to Caldwell and also in a 2-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas last week. 

Nassim Zahouani, Daemen (Jr, M - Saint Denis, France)
Scored the game-winning goal and also registered an assist as Daemen picked up a 3-0 win over Chestnut Hill in its lone game of the week.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: The Wildcats (3-3-1, 0-2-0 ECC) snapped a three-game losing streak following a 3-0 win at Chestnut Hill last week. Junior Nassim Zahouani and freshman Cody Cavuoto both scored their first career goal in the game. Graduate student Marcos Lerma Escobar stopped five shots en route to his first shutout of the season. Daemen hosts Roberts Wesleyan Wednesday, before traveling to St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday.

District of Columbia:  UDC Men's Soccer went 1-1 in conference play on the week. They fell to Molloy 1-2 on the road before hosting D'Youville at home and picking up their first conference win of the season. Next up, they will host Mercy College, on October 1st.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted.

Mercy: The No. 23 Mercy College men's soccer team went 1-1 on the week with a 3-1 win over Queens and a 2-1 loss to Molloy. The Mavericks were led by seniors David Breitenbach and Vasco Baptista who both had a team-high four points. Mercy resumes action on Saturday when they play at UDC at 1 p.m.

Molloy: The Lions continued conference play this week. Molloy went 2-0 on the week with a pair of come from behind victories. The cardinal and white defeated UDC, 2-1, off a pair of goals from sophomore Gio Fabiano, and put together a second half comeback to defeat No. 23 ranked Mercy, 2-1, with a goal in the final minute of play.

Queens:  The Knights went 1-1 on the week falling to Mercy Wednesday afternoon before ending the week with a 1-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan. Queens opens the week in non-conference action against Georgian Court on Tuesday evening before hosting Molloy Saturday evening in conference play.

Roberts Wesleyan: The Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team is now 5-4-1 after a win over D'Youville, 3-0 and loss to Queens at home, 1-0 last week. The team travels to Daemen on Wednesday.

Staten Island: No team notes submitted.

St. Thomas Aquinas: St. Thomas Aquinas (3-2-3, 0-1-2 ECC) went 0-1 on the week, falling to Staten Island 2-0. STAC hosts Saint Anselm on September 28 (2:30 p.m.) and then Daemen on October 1 (2:00 p.m.).
