ECC Women's Basketball Report - Week Eight

Player of the Week
Jenalyse Alarcon, Staten Island (Fr, F - Troy, N.Y.)
Alarcon led the Dolphins to a thrilling 92-88 double-overtime win over Bridgeport with 32 point, 17 rebound double-double. She also added two assists and a steal in the effort. Alarcon shot 63.2 percent on the afternoon, draining 12-of-19 shots from the floor. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Dimitra Gkizani, Roberts Wesleyan (Sr, C - Athens, Greece)
Gkizani helped the Redhawks to a 76-63 win over UDC by pulling down 20 rebounds, 11 of which were defensive. She also blocked one shot and helped hold the Firebirds to just 38.6 percent shooting on the afternoon.

Rookie of the Week
Chelsea Reeves, Queens (Fr, G - Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Reeves scored a career-high 33 points (11-of-18 FG, 11-of-12 FT) with nine rebounds and five assists against STAC. Reeves's 33 points are the most scored by a Queens freshman since 2018-19 when teammate Nora Gabel tallied 32 points against Mercy. It was the fourth straight double-digit performance for the Brooklyn native.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Ronnasia Blatch-Huggins, Dist. Columbia (Fr, G/F - Wilmington, Del.)
Blatch-Huggins averaged a double-double on the week to lead the Firebirds to a 1-1 record in conference play. In the win against Bridgeport, she scored 12 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and in the loss against Roberts, she scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Overall, she averaged 14 points and 15 rebounds per game. She also had six assists and three steals against Roberts Wesleyan.

Alexa Huertas, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr, G - Haverstraw, N.Y.)

Huertas posted 28 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals in an 86-82 overtime win at Queens. The senior guard shot 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the floor and 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from three in 45 minutes of action.

Erin Leary, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr, F - Carle Place, N.Y.)
Leary posted 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in an 86-82 overtime win at Queens. The freshman forward shot 60.0 percent (9-for-15) from the floor in 40 minutes of action.

Gia Esposito, Staten Island (So, G - Staten Island, N.Y.)

Esposito helped the Dolphins to a 92-88 double-overtime victory over Bridgeport by contributing 22 points, four rebounds, four assists, and six steals. She also made a clutch three pointer in the final seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.

ECC Team Notes

Bridgeport: The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team heads into this week's play, one game at Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, with a 3-10 overall record and an 0-6 ECC mark. Samirah Henderson leads the Purple Knights in scoring averaging 18.6 points per game. She is joined in double figures by Janiece Loney at 14.4 ppg, Brianna Meekins at 13.1 ppg, and Stephanie McBride, who missed both of last week's games is averaging a double-double at 10.4 points and a team-best 10.2 rebounds per contest.

Daemen: Daemen remains at 5-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play after their lone game last week (at D'Youville) was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. It marked the fourth consecutive postponement for the Wildcats who have been idle since defeating Staten Island 76-59 on Dec. 17. The Wildcats host Molloy (Jan. 14) and Queens (Jan. 16) this weekend.

District of Columbia: UDC split a pair of games last week to move to 7-6 (3-1 ECC) on the season. The Firebirds topped Bridgeport (56-52) before falling to Roberts Wesleyan (76-63). This week, UDC had a Monday contest with D'Youville postponed but is still slated to host St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday and visit Mercy on Saturday.

D'Youville: The D'Youville Saints' Saturday game against the Daemen Wildcats was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. The Saints' next matchup is home against Queens College Friday, Jan. 14.

Mercy: The Mercy College women's basketball team was idle this week. Mercy resumes action on Monday when they play at Molloy at 5 p.m.

Molloy: The Lions didn't play last week. Molloy plays Mercy Monday, January 10.

Queens: Queens travel to Buffalo, N.Y. with a matchup against D'Youville College Saints on Friday (Jan. 14) and Sunday (Jan. 16) against Daemen College Wildcats.

Roberts Wesleyan: The Roberts women's basketball team had its mid-week home game with CSI postponed, but was back in action on Saturday, picking up a 76-63 win over UDC. The Redhawks are 5-5 on the season and will host Bridgeport on Saturday, Jan 15 at 2 p.m.

Staten Island: The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team completed yet another late-game comeback this afternoon as they outlasted the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport in double-overtime, 92-88. The Dolphins snap a six-game losing streak and improve to 3-8 overall, 1-3 in conference play. Up next they will host Mercy College on Wednesday night.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team (3-9, 2-1 ECC) posted an 86-82 overtime victory over Queens College last week. The Spartans next visit UDC on Jan. 12 (5:00 p.m.), before hosting Staten Island on Jan. 15 (1:00 p.m.).
