ECC Indoor Track & Field Report - Week Six

Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Ryan Karker, Roberts Wesleyan (Sr - Greece, N.Y.)
Karker had an eventful day at the Youngstown State University Mid-Major Invitational with a pair of second place finishes in the 500m and 800m. He set the program record in the 500m (1:05.33) and hit an NCAA DII provisional mark in the 800m (1:51.93). Both times are also the fastest in the ECC this season. 

Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Emmanuel Mena Jimenez, St. Thomas Aquinas (So - West Haverstraw, N.Y.)
Mena Jimenez broke the school record (for the third time this season) in the weight throw with a toss of 18.99m to win the event at the Monmouth University Winter Collegiate Invitational. The toss was good for an NCAA provisional mark, as well. Mena Jimenez also placed sixth in the shot put with a hurl of 14.19m.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Dayna Thompson, Dist. Columbia (Fr - St. Mary's, Jamaica)
Thompson had a strong showing at the Winter Classic, hitting the NCAA Provisional qualifying time in the 60m with 7.65s -a new PR and UDC record. Throughout the 60m rounds, she ran the three fastest times in the ECC this season (7.71s, 7.68s, 7.65s). She then went on to clock in at 24.97s in the 200m, which also broke the UDC record and is the fastest ECC time so far this season.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Jazmine Severo, Staten Island (Fr - Merced, Calif.)
Severo continued her impressive freshman campaign this past weekend with a first-place finish in the high jump at the Wesleyan Indoor Invite. After achieving a height of 1.55 meters at her previous two meets, she achieved a new CSI record height of 1.62 in Saturday's outing. Additionally, her mark is now first in the ECC this season.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Men
Juan Arango, Molloy (So - Massapequa Park, N.Y.)
Arango set a new program record for the 400-meter at the Terrier Classic, running the distance in 50.35 seconds. That mark is good for second in the ECC this season. 

Robbie Babson, Georgian Court (So - Toms River, N.J.)
Babson is now No. 1 in the ECC in the shot put after setting a new indoor PR with a toss of 16.19m at the Monmouth Winter Classic. Was second overall with a Division I competitor finishing first. Leads the conference in the shot put by 1.7 meters.

Erik Matthews, Daemen (Gr - Galway, N.Y.)
Matthews became the first athlete from Daemen to ever take part in the seven-event heptathlon this weekend during the YSU Mid Major Invitational. It includes three track events (60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, and 1,000-meter run) and four field events (long jump, high jump, shot put, and pole vault). Took part in the 60-meter dash, long jump, high jump, and shot put Friday night. He placed second out of 15 runners in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.35 seconds, seventh out of 13 in the long jump (6.13 meters), eighth out of 14 in the high jump (1.69 meters), and 13th out of 15 in the shot put (8.20 meters). Took part in the pole vault, the 60-meter hurdles, and the 1,000 meters Saturday. The school record holder in the 60-meter hurdles (8.92 seconds), he placed sixth out of 14 with a time of 9.16 seconds which ranks as the seventh fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles in program history. He ran the 1,000 meters for the first time in his career and placed second out of 12 entrants with a time of 2.50.23. He capped the day and the event by placing 13th out of 15 in the pole vault with a leap of 2.95 meters. Matthews accumulated 4,110 points over the seven events and placed fifth out of 14 entrants.

Wayne Robinson, Georgian Court (So - Woodstown, N.J.)
With his converted time of 22.19 in the 200m at the Monmouth Winter Classic, Robinson moved to the top of the ECC this season in the 200m.

Women
Ophiellia Bernard, Post (Fr - Montego Bay, Jamaica)
At the Wesleyan Indoor Invite, Bernard won both the 60m (8.18) and 200m (27.27) and also came in second in the 400m (1:07.09).

Kassandra Nolet, Daemen (Gr - Fort Erie, Ontario)
Nolet ran the 1,000 meters for the first time in her storied career during day one of the YSU Mid Major Invitational and placed first out of 22 runners with a time of 3:05.28 coming just five seconds shy of the school record time of 3:00.56 set by Mackenzie Donahue at the Jim Wuske Invitational on February 4, 2017. She capped the weekend by placing third out of 75 runners in the mile on day two with a personal best time of 5:15.42. Nolet finished just five seconds behind the event winner Haley Hamilton of Duquesne, and less than a second behind Anna Igims (5:14.98) of Slippery Rock. It marks the fourth time this season Nolet has posted a top-three finish.

Hailee Lowe, Roberts Wesleyan (Jr - Alexander, N.Y.)
Set program record for total points in pentathlon with 3,172 for a third place finish at the Youngstown State University Mid-Major Invitational. 

Shanae Rayside, Georgian Court (Sr - Lakewood, N.J.)
Rayside was the top Division II finisher in the triple jump (11.29m) behind only a DI competitor at the Monmouth Winter Classic. She also set an indoor PR in the long jump (5.19m) to move to fourth in the conference in the event.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: The Wildcats took part in the two-day YSU Mid Major Invitational this past weekend. Graduate student Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ont.) placed first in the 1,000 meters on Friday night and finished third out of 75 runners in the mile on Saturday. She has now posted a top-three finish in four races this season. Sophomore Alyssa Amirato (Depew, N.Y.) posted a school-record leap of 5.02 meters during the long jump completion on Friday, eclipsing the previous program standard of 4.93 meters set by Katja Meyer at the RIT Invitational on January 12, 2019 and the Brockport Multi and Invitational on January 26, 2019. Graduate student Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) made program history over the weekend by becoming the first-ever Daemen athlete to compete in a heptathlon. He finished second in the 60 meter dash and 1,000 meters and placed fifth out of 14 entrants overall. Daemen returns to action Saturday (Feb. 4) when it takes part in the Brockport Multi Invitational.

District of Columbia: Dayna Thompson and Kayla Cooper had really strong performances at the Winter Classic. Thompson ran a national provisional qualifying time in the 60m and broke two UDC records. The Firebirds are idle next weekend but are back in action on Feb 10th.

Queens: Queens were off on the week and return to action as they compete in the Rutgers Scarlets Knights open over the course of two days on Friday and Saturday at The Armory.

Roberts Wesleyan: The men's and women's track and field team competed at the YSU Mid-Major Invitational hosted by Youngstown State University. Hailee Lowe and Ryan Karker had standout performances over the weekend. Karker hit the NCAA DII provisional mark in the 800m while Lowe set a new program record in the pentathlon.

Staten Island: No team notes submitted.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Indoor Track & Field team competed at the Monmouth University Winter Collegiate Invitational last week. STAC will return to action on February 3 at the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights Open at the Armory in NYC.
