ECC Indoor Track & Field Report - Week Five

Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Kouta Anyika, Holy Family (Fr - Philadelphia, Pa.)
Anyika narrowly missed out on two school records and NCAA Provisionals, first placing second out of 62 in the 400m with a time of 49.44 that moved him atop the ECC while falling .05 short of the school record and less than a second shy of an NCAA provisional. He then ran a collegiate PR 22.28 in the 200m for the 10th-fastest time out of 66 entries, clocking .02 seconds behind the school record and again less than a second away from an NCAA provisional. Both times were also the fastest in the ECC so far this season. 

Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Nishorn Pierre, Holy Family (So - Grenada)
One week after setting an NCAA Provisional in the high jump, Pierre did so in the triple jump at the NYC Gotham Cup. The sophomore marked at 14.80m to break the school record, placing second in the field of 20 with the longest jump in the ECC this season, as well as the ninth longest in all of Division II.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Kayla Cooper, Dist. Columbia (Fr - Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Cooper won the 60m finals at the Catholic University Meet with a time of 7.86s but her fastest time of the day came in the semifinals where she ran 7.84s. She went on to place second in the 200m with a time of 25.91s which converts to 25.5s on a banked track. Her time in the 60m was the best in the ECC so far this season, while her 200m time ranks second.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Emmanuela Katou Kouami, Dist. Columbia (Fr - Bronx, N.Y.)
Kouami won the weight throw at the Catholic University Meet with a toss of 15.04m, breaking the UDC record of 14.42m that she set in her season opener earlier this season. It is also the best mark in the ECC so far this season.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Men
Ryan Karker, Roberts Wesleyan (Sr - Greece, N.Y.)
Karker won the mile at the Highlander Invitational in an ECC season-best time of 4:24.65.

Xavier Seals, Georgian Court (Jr - Woodstown, N.J.)
Seals finished third (first among DII student-athletes) in the 800m at the Ramapo Season Opener. He crossed the line in a time of 1:55.89.

Jan Volkmar, Georgian Court (So - Eschwege, Germany)
Volkmar finished in first place in the pole vault (4.55m) and fourth place in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.62 at the Ramapo Season Opener. His pole vault mark is the best in the ECC this season.  

Corden Zimmerman, Roberts Wesleyan (Fr - Bergen, N.Y.)
Zimmerman finished in first place in the long jump (6.43m) and third place in the high jump (1.81m) at the Highlander Invitational.

Women
Shania Le Maitre, Holy Family (Jr - Champs Fleurs, Trinidad & Tobago)
Le Maitre(2:18.06) ran a collegiate PR to place second of the field of 31 in the 800m at the NYC Gotham Cup, missing out on the school record by .13 seconds. She was also part of the 4x400m that set HFU's season-best for the second week in a row, combining with three teammates to post the second-fastest time, 3:59.58, amongst 12 quartets.

Hailee Lowe, Roberts Wesleyan (Jr - Alexander, N.Y.)
Lowe won the long jump at the Highlander Invitational with a leap of 5.17m. 

Kassandra Nolet, Daemen (Gr - Fort Erie, Ontario)
Nolet placed first out of 36 runners in the mile at the Highlander Invitational with a time of 5:17.99. Her effort comes a month after she placed third out of 21 runners in the mile with a personal best time of 5:15.65 at the Nazareth Alumni Opener.

Dayna Thompson, Dist. Columbia (Fr - St. Mary's, Jamaica)
Thompson walked away with three golds at the Catholic Indoor meet. She won the 400m, the 200m, and the 4x400m. In the 200m she ran 25.75s which converts to 25.3s in the 200m, which puts her first in the conference. She then capped off the meet with a win in the 4x400m.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: Daemen returned to action for the first time since Dec. 9 this past weekend at the Highlander Invitational. A first place showing by graduate student Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ont.) in the mile and multiple top-five showings by freshman Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Alyssa Amirato (Depew, N.Y.) highlighted the day for the Wildcat women. A first place showing by senior Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) in the 800 meters and three top-five efforts by graduate student Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) highlighted the day for the Wildcat men. Daemen returns two action this weekend (Jan. 27-28) when it take part in the Mid Major Invitational hosted by Youngstown State.

District of Columbia: UDC had a strong showing at the Catholic University meet. They head to Virginia next week for the Winter Classic.

Holy Family: Korryn Braxton-Young broke her own school record in the weight throw on Friday, highlighting the HFU women's track and field team's performance at the NYC Gotham Cup hosted at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. She bested her previous school record of 12.28m by .53m, with her mark of 12.71m ranking ninth out of 26 entries. Braxton-Young (11.86m) finished fourth out of 36 in the shot put too, while Shania Le Maitre (2:18.06) and Teresa Faust (2:26.96) both ran collegiate PRs to place in the top-six of the field of 31 in 800m, with Le Maitre missing out on the school record by .13 seconds to cross second. One week after setting an NCAA Provisional in the high jump, Nishorn Pierre did so in the triple jump as the HFU men's track & field team competed at the NYC Gotham Cup at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday. Pierre marked at 14.80m to break the school record set by teammate Robbie Robertson earlier this season. Placing second in the field of 20, it was the longest jump in the ECC this season, as well as the ninth longest in all of Division II. After advancing to the 60m hurdle final with the sixth-fastest qualifying time, 8.51, amongst 27 entries, Terrence Jones crossed in 8.23 to place third in the final with the fastest time in the ECC this season. The time was .01 second away from an NCAA provisional. Jones also posted a top-five finish after marking a collegiate personal record (PR) in the long jump, 6.74m. Kouto Anyika narrowly missed out on two school records and NCAA Provisionals, first placing second out of 62 in the 400m with a time of 49.44 that moved him atop the ECC while falling .05 short of the school record and less than a second shy of an NCAA provisional.

Queens: The Knights competed in the Ramapo College Season Opener Friday with several Knights setting new PR. Queens have the week off until Feb. 3 when they compete in the Rutgers Scarlets Knights Open.

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts got back to competition at the Houghton Highlander Invitational on Saturday. The Redhawks will travel to Youngstown State on Friday for the weekend YSU Mid Major Invitational.

Staten Island: The Dolphins lone outing this week came at Saturday's Gotham Cup. Competing in the event for the third time, the Dolphins got standout efforts in the field from Sklyar Pointer, Jazmine Severo, Ava Thompson and Aryanna Finkelstein. In the Weight Throw, Pointer finished 7th, and in the High Jump Severo finished 3rd.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Indoor Track & Field team competed at the Ramapo College Opener last week. STAC will return to action on January 28 at the Monmouth University Winter Classic (OceanFirst Bank Center - West Long Branch, N.J.).
