ECC Women's Tennis Report - Week Three

Player & Rookie of the Week
Amaia Balaguer Brau, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr - Benicarlo, Spain)
Balaguer Brau advanced to the final of the ITA East Regional Tournament before falling 6-2, 6-2 to Adelphi's Sanne Selmer Gilje. Balaguer Brau went 3-1 in the tournament including a quarterfinal victory over ECC Preseason Player of the Year, Maja Makal of Queens. 


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Caroline Hany-Fawzy, Queens (So - Alexandria, Egypt)
Seeded No. 15 in the ITA East Region Singles Tournament, Fawzy advanced to the semi-final round as the sophomore went 4-1 in the tournament. Fawzy defeated No. 10 Magdalena Hubickova 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the semi-final.

Maja Makal, Queens (Sr - Bialystok, Poland)
In the ITA East Regional Tournament, Makal advanced to the quarterfinal of the singles tournament going 3-1. In the Doubles, Makal with Gabriela Sciarrotta advanced to the semi-final match as the duo went 3-1 before suffering a heartbreaking loss in both tournament matches.

ECC Team Notes

Daemen: The Wildcats (0-4, 0-2 ECC) took a break from dual match play and took part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championships this past week. Sophomore Kitsa Scime and Yinett Del Leon and freshman Carly Armitage all posted first-round singles wins. Scime bowed out in the second round and is now 5-3 in singles play this year. The Wildcats are idle until they host SUNY Fredonia in a non-league match Saturday.

District of Columbia: UDC Women's Tennis competed in the ITA East Regional Championships. Simoné Pärn and Sofia Bellucco made it to the Round of 16 in doubles, and Parn made it in singles. Next up the Firebirds will play Millersville at home before heading to Molloy on the weekend to open up conference play.

D'Youville: No team notes submitted. 

Molloy: The Lions fell to Post University, 6-1, before competing in the annual ITA Regional Championship. Noor Goyvaerts advanced to the second round in singles and doubles with partner Camilla Caballero Abreu. The Lions open league play on Saturday (Oct. 1) against the University of the District of Columbia at 11:00 a.m. from the Queens Tennis Courts.

Queens: The Knights impressed in the ITA East Regional Tournament as Caroline Hany-Fawzy advanced to the semi-final round. While in the doubles side, the duo of Maja Makal and Gabriela Sciarrotta advanced to the semi-final round.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team (3-0, 2-0 ECC) competed in the ITA Division II East Regional at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. STAC returns to action on October 1, hosting Chestnut Hill at 12:00 p.m.
