ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week 13

Player of the Week
Demetre Roberts, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr, G - Mount Vernon, N.Y.)
Roberts averaged 23.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game over four games last week. Roberts posted a career-high 36 points, with three rebounds and five assists against Molloy, followed by 24 points, four rebounds, and six assists at Molloy, then 21 points, three rebounds, and six assists versus Queens, and finally 12 points, five rebounds and 10 assists at Queens. The senior guard shot 52.5 percent (32-for-61) from the floor, 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from three, and 80.0 percent (20-for-25) from the foul line. He also added 15 rebounds, 27 assists, and six steals.

Defensive Player of the Week
Grant Singleton, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr, G - Sumter, S.C.)
Singleton averaged 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game over four games last week. He also helped the Spartans force 16.5 turnovers per game. Singleton recorded five rebounds and an ECC season-high eight steals against Molloy, then four rebounds at Molloy, then three rebounds and three steals versus Queens, and finally three rebounds and four steals at Queens.

Rookie of the Week
Messiah Mallory, Staten Island (Fr, F/C - Watervliet, N.Y.)
Mallory averaged 17.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per game as the Dolphins split a pair of games last week. He shot 62.5 percent from the field on the week. In a win over Roberts Wesleyan, Mallory tallied 17 points and 15 rebounds. He followed with another double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds in a loss to Bridgeport.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Sean Fasoyiro, Daemen (Gr, G - Houston, Texas)
Led a balanced effort by netting 15 points in Daemen's 97-52 rout of D'Youville... entered the game just eight points shy of 1,000 for his career and reached the milestone on a free throw in the first half... totaled 494 points in 81 games over three seasons at Franklin Pierce and has now scored 513 points in 39 games for Daemen... Daemen is 27-12 with Fasoyiro in the starting lineup since the start of last season... he has scored 10+ points in nine of the last 11 games.

Darren Fergus, Molloy (Fr, G - Freeport, N.Y.)
On the week, Fergus put together three games of scoring at least 25 points in each game. The freshman collected a double-double against Mercy, scoring 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Overall, Fergus averaged 27 points per game, seven rebounds a game, and just under five assists a game.

Garrett Kirkland, Mercy (Jr, G - Springdale, Md.)
Kirkland averaged a team-high 18.5 points per game on 46.2 percent shooting as Mercy went 2-0 on the week. The junior opened the week with 13 points on three three-pointers in the win over Queens on Wednesday. The guard ended the week with a career-high 24 points on 5-of-10 shooting from downtown in the win over Molloy on Saturday.

Kenyon Stone, Dist. Columbia (Jr, G - Bowie, Md.)
Stone averaged 23.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. In the Firebirds' win over Bridgeport, he had a game-high 25 points on 58.8 percent shooting from the field while adding four rebounds and two blocks. In the game against Roberts Wesleyan, he had a team-high 22 points off of 69.2 percent shooting from the field while adding four rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block.

ECC Team Notes

Bridgeport: The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team heads into this week's play, a home game with Molloy on Wednesday night and a trip to Queens on Sunday afternoon, with a 9-14 overall record and a 6-8 ECC mark. Junior Mason Williams leads the Purple Knights in scoring averaging 13.2 points per game. He is joined in double figures by classmate Malcolm Moye at 13.0 ppg. and sophomore Tim Dawson at 12.5 ppg. Graduate student Nemanja Zubac leads UB on the glass grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game. Zubac is also the team leader in blocked shots with 33 in 21 games played.

Daemen: Daemen improved to 17-6 overall and 14-0 in ECC play following a 97-52 defeat of D'Youville in their only game last week. The Wildcats own the region's longest winning streak at 12 straight games and have clinched a top-two seed in the upcoming ECC Championship. Sean Fasoyiro scored his 1,000th career point in the win over DYC. Andrew Sischo continues to lead the conference in both scoring (21.9 ppg) and rebounding (13.5 rpg). A huge showdown with second-place St. Thomas Aquinas looms this Friday (Feb. 18) as well as the Wildcats' final home game of the regular season Sunday (Feb. 20) vs. Mercy.

District of Columbia: The Firebirds split a pair of games last week to move to 7-18 (6-9 ECC) on the season. The Firebirds started the week with a 101-85 win over Bridgeport, before falling 95-87 to Roberts Wesleyan. This week, UDC hosts Staten Island on Saturday in their only game of the week.

D'Youville: D'Youville is looking to bounce back after a 0-2 week with losses to Daemen and Villa Maria. Jared Sullivan paced the Saints with 24 points on the week, while Bryson Birdsong scored 21.

Mercy: The Mercy College men's basketball team went 2-0 on the week with wins over Queens and Molloy. The Mavericks were led by junior Garrett Kirkland who averaged a team-high 18.5 points per game. Mercy resumes action on Friday when they play at D'Youville at 8 p.m.

Molloy: No team notes submitted.

Queens: The Knights conclude the road portion of their ECC schedule as they go up against Roberts Wesleyan Wednesday evening. On Sunday the Knights will open a four-game homestand to conclude the regular season starting a key matchup against Bridgeport.

Staten Island: The College of Staten Island men's basketball team survived yet another late-game scare as they hung on to beat Roberts Wesleyan College, 80-77, this past Wednesday night. They went on to play Saturday where they lost to the University of Bridgeport today, 79-71. Up next they will head to Nyack college on Tuesday Night.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (20-4, 13-1 ECC) went a perfect 4-0 last week, with victories over Molloy (104-92) & (82-78) and Queens (71-59) & (75-68). STAC heads to Daemen on February 18 (7:30 p.m.) and D'Youville on February 20 (3:00 p.m.).
