ECC Annual End-of-Year Award Recipients Announced

West Babylon, N.Y. - The East Coast Conference announced its annual award winners on Thursday morning. The awards highlight team and student-athlete accomplishments as well as community service-based efforts throughout the conference. 

The women’s basketball team at the College of Staten Island was honored as the winner of the ECC Community Engagement Award of Excellence for their work with Project Hospitality. (read more)

Molloy received the ECC Cares Award for leading the conference in monies raised for collective causes. The Lions raised a total of $7,303 for various causes, good for an average of $19.85 per student-athlete. (read more)

Molloy was presented with the ECC Community Cup after averaging nearly 8.33 hours of community service and community engagement per student-athlete, the highest among the ECC's nine institutions. (read more)

Mercy was awarded the ECC Academic Success Rate Award. The Mavericks earned the honor after posting a 93 percent graduation success rate in the NCAA Academic Tracking System. (read more)

Nolan Giblin of the Mercy baseball team was named the 2022-23 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Giblin, who was an All-Conference First Team selection after hitting .326 with 33 RBI, held a 3.92 GPA as a senior Finance major. (read more)

Simoné Pärn of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was honored as the 2022-23 Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Pärn compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA in both her undergraduate and graduate studies as a Biology major while also earning the fourth All-Conference First Team selection of her career this past season. Gretchen Beyer of Daemen women's soccer, Olivia Cerbo of St. Thomas Aquinas women's lacrosse, Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk of Mercy women’s lacrosse, and Ryan O’Neill of Molloy men’s lacrosse were selected as the 2022-23 John Smillie, Jr. Award winners for overcoming personal and physical challenges to continue to play the sport that they love. The conference's most prestigious award, dubbed the Excellence in Community and Character Award (E.C.C. Award), was given to Dan Smith of St. Thomas Aquinas men's track & field and Marina Maerkl of Daemen women's basketball. The E.C.C. Award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through positive actions and behaviors that are consistent with the NCAA Division II attributes of learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, balance, and resourcefulness.
