Molloy Tops Queens in ECC Semifinal, 3-1

Amherst, N.Y. - The women's volleyball team is returning to the East Coast Conference Championship game for the first time since the 2019 season, defeating Queens College, 3-1, this evening from Lumsden Gymnasium on the campus of Daemen University. With the victory, Molloy improved to 16-10 on the season.

How it Happened

  • The contest was tied six times in the opening 20 points before Queens pulled in front by six, 16-10.
  • Down 20-15, Molloy responded with five of the next six points to come within one, 21-20. 
  • Queens would take four of the next five points to take a one-set victory. 
  • The Lions took a 13-4 lead in the second set led by five kills from junior Kathleen Doherty
  • Molloy increased its lead to 20-5 in a run that featured kills from juniors Chye Davis and Kiarra Roth and freshman Maya Akana as well as a block from Davis.
  • Queens would come within 10, but kills from Davis, Doherty, and freshman Canyen Rodriguez sealed the set in Molloy's favor, 25-13. 
  • Leading by five to start the third set, 9-5, the Lions fired off a 10-point run that included four kills from Doherty, two from Davis, blocks from Davis and Rodriguez, and an ace from freshman Kaitlin Jordan.
  • The Knights would come within eight, 22-14, but were unable to surpass Molloy's earlier lead.
  • The score was tied four times in the first 12 points with the Knights in front, 7-5. 
  • The cardinal and white came out of a timeout to a 6-3 run that featured two kills from Doherty, one from Akana, and an ace from Rodriguez to lead 11-10.
  • Queens would come within three, 19-15, but six of the final 10 points would go in favor of the Lions to send them back to the ECC Championship game for the first time since 2019.

Top Performances

  • Doherty topped the Lions with 20 kills while adding 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.
  • Davis tallied 12 digs while adding three blocks.
  • Rodriguez also recorded a double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs to go with a team-leading four blocks. 
  • Jordan also put up four blocks to go with six kills and four digs.
  • Miller led with 33 digs. She was joined in double digits by sophomore Alex Brown (11) and Akana (10).

Molloy will take on top-seeded Daemen University for the East Coast Conference Championship tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. from Lumsden Gymnasium.
