West Haven, Conn. - Despite gritty play
throughout the match, the LIU Post Pioneers could not pull out the
upset, dropping the first game of the NCAA Division II East
Regional 3-0 to Adelphi University Thursday afternoon. The
set scores were 25-23, 25-21, and 25-20.
LIU Post finishes its season with an overall record of 23-15, while
Adelphi advances to the semifinals with a record of 25-11.
Freshman Harlee Meyers (Kailua, Hawaii) was the lone Pioneer to
reach a double-digit kill total with 10, and freshman libero Rachel
Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) scooped up a game-high 12 digs. In
her final collegiate game, senior Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.)
held true to form with five total blocks on the afternoon.
The Pioneers had a very spread out setting game with every single
player recording at least one assist with sophomore Lulu Centro
(Rome, Italy) leading the way with 13.
Kaitlyn DeStefano powered the Adelphi offense along with Chelsea
Overholt as they both posted double figure kills with 11 and 10
respectively, while Katie Bryson led all players with 30 assists.
Bryson also paced the Panther defense, totaling 10 digs.
The Panthers opened the first set on a 7-2 run, but the Pioneers
eventually were able to tie the set at 13 and took their first lead
at 14-13. Five tie scores ensued with the latest coming at
23-all. An LIU Post attack error and a Panther kill sealed
the first set win for Adelphi, 25-23.
The second set saw much back-and-forth play with 11 separate
occurrences of a tie score and five lead changes. The
Panthers were able to close out the second set on a 9-4 run capped
off with an OVerholt kill.
More close play was seen in the beginning of the third set with the
latest tie score coming at 13-all. The Pioneers were unable
to match the Panthers' hot play as they closed out the match on a
12-7 run taking the final set 25-20 for the 3-0 match victory.
