DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Members of the Mercy College women's lacrosse team helped 5-year old Noah Biorkman celebrate Christmas early this year by sending more than 30 holiday cards to Biorkman's home in Ferndale, Mich.

Biorkman, was diagnosed with Stage IV pediatric Neuroblastoma in Feb. 2007, in August of that year, he went into remission but relapsed again in Sept. 2008. This fall, Biorkman's family decided to make their Christmas celebration a little early so that Biorkman can celebrate with them.

On their local news channel, Biorkman's mother made a plea with the locals of Ferndale to help them celebrate by sending him cards so he can open them before the holidays. Since then, the Biorkman's mailbox has been overflowing with Christmas cards and gifts, all from people hoping to make Noah's last Christmas a very special one.

The women's lacrosse team heard of the project through an acquaintance of goaltender Lauren Mateja (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion).

"The team decided to get together and make Christmas cards for Noah after hearing about this cause," remarked head coach Francesca DeLorenzo. "It was a great to see them all working together for a good cause, and to know that it will bring a smile to his face around the holidays is well worth it."

In addition to the hand-made cards, the team sent poms and stick-on washable tattoos with the Mercy College Maverick horsehead logo.

"We heard about Noah's condition and our hearts went out to him and his family," said team captain Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport South Manor). "Even though what we did was a small gesture, it will mean a lot to him and we were happy to do it."

The Biorkman family celebrated their Christmas holiday on Nov. 8 with close friends and family.
