Rochester, N.Y. - The ECC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships were both won by Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. This clinches a clean sweep through all six of the ECC's Cross Country and Track & Field Championships during the 2014-15 school year for the Redhawks.
The Roberts Wesleyan women outdistanced defending ECC Champion*, University of the District of Columbia, by a score of 187-139. Six different events were won by the Redhawks in all. Individual winners for Roberts included April Sablan (5,000m run - 18:32.32), Brianna Calderon (400m hurdles - 1:07.22), Rachel Brush (3,000m steeplechase - 11:59.06), Kasey Semmler (pole vault - 3.38m), Katy Perry (discus - 38.70m), and Victoria Houser (hammer throw - 44.16m).
UDC's Simone Grant and Molloy's Stephanie Meyer also turned in impressive performances on the day. Grant won both the 100m dash (12.18) and 200m dash (24.94), while helping the Firebirds' 4 x 100 meter relay team finish in the top spot as well. In addition, Grant also came in second place in both the long jump (5.50m) and the triple jump (11.22m). Meyer was the top finisher in the 100m hurdles (15.18), the long jump (5.61m), the triple jump (11.33m), and finished second in the high jump.
In the men's championship, Roberts Wesleyan dominated the field, topping two-time defending ECC Champion, Queens, by a margin of 233-161. A huge reason for the Redhawks victory was 39 points from the reigning ECC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Gabe Rivera. Rivera won the high jump (1.83m), came in second in the 100m dash (10.76) and 200m dash (22.12), finished third in the long jump (6.57m), and fourth in the pole vault (2.90m). Rivera also helped the Redhawks to a second place finish in the 4 x 400m relay (3:31.61) and fourth in the 4 x 100m relay (43.78).
Other individual winners for Roberts included Thomas Rodger (800m run - 1.58.39 and 1,500m run - 4:03.39), Kevin Brown (5,000m run - 15:38.49), Justin Bender (3,000m steeplechase - 9:53.79), Aaron McGinnis (long jump - 6.91m and triple jump - 13.19m), and Malcolm Shaw (javelin throw - 55.36m).
Top performances on the day were also turned in by Winslow Dorsainvil of St. Thomas Aquinas and Queens College's Christopher Pensa and Angel Alers-Rosario. Dorsainvil won both the 100m and 200m dashes for the second straight year in times of 10.52 and 21.94, respectively. Pensa and Alers-Rosario finished in the top two in the shot put, the discus, and the hammer throw. Penas topped the shot put (13.39m) and discus (49.00m), while Alers-Rosario won the hammer (52.50m).
In the third year of the championship, 10 meet records were also broken with three coming in the women's meet and seven in the men's. Records are denoted with a # in the list of event winners below.**
* - UDC came in second behind Roberts Wesleyan in 2014 as well but were named champions due to Roberts Wesleyan's NCAA provisional member status at the time.
** - Results from some events surpassed previous ECC records but will not count as such due to having wind speeds higher than the NCAA maximum to be counted as records.
