Lakewood, N.J. - The University of the District
of Columbia women took the top spot in while Queens College were
named champions for the second straight year at the East Coast
Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship meets on Saturday
afternoon.
Despite finishing second in the meet standings, the UDC was named
champions because Roberts Wesleyan was ineligible to win the
championship as NCAA Provisional members. The Firebirds' win
gives them a clean sweep after also capturing the ECC Indoor
Championship this year as well.
UDC earned 158 points overall in the meet. In all, seven
different events were won by the Firebirds with Kaydian Jones
leading the way by winning the 100 meter dash (12.24), 200 meter
dash (24.80), and also by joining Shauna-Kay Creary, Jasmine Smith,
and Simone Grant on the winning 4 x 100 meter relay team
(49:01). Other UDC top-finishers include Jerily Benjamin (400
meter dash – 57.14), Simone Grant (long jump - 5.32 meters),
Shauna-Kay Creary (triple jump - 11.20 meters), and the 4 x
400 meter relay team of Charmaine Sweeney, Kaydian Jones, Marlena
Wright, and Jerily Benjamin.
Roberts Wesleyan was also impressive in their showing, topping the
event with 214 points overall. The Redhawks came out on top in
eight different events. Their winners included Rachel Hust (800
meter run - 2:17.13), Rachel Hutchinson (1500 meter run - 4:43.16),
Megan Hulton (5000 meter run - 18:30.02), Kellie Lawton (10000
meter run - 43:55.85), Brianna Calderon (400 meter hurdles -
1:09.00), Kasey Semmler (pole vault - 3.20 meters), Victoria Houser
(hammer throw - 43.89 meters), and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of
Kennedy Lewandowski, Rachel Putman, Rachel Hutchinson, and Rachel
Hust.
After tying as champions with St. Thomas Aquinas a year ago, Queens College ran away with the men's meet to repeat as champions. The throwers for Queens were a huge reason why the Knights came away with the title. In both the shot put and discus the top five finishers were from Queens. The hammer throw was nearly the same, with the top four finishers coming from the Knights. Including the javelin, Queens earned 97 of their team's 186 points in the four throwing events.
Individual winners in the throwing events for the Knights included Gregory Gromling (shot put - 15.37 meters), Christopher Pensa (discus - 47.60 meters), and Angel-Alers Rosario (48.92 meters). Other top finishers for Queens include Kurt Samuel, who won the 800 meter run for the second straight year in a time of 1:56.05, and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Skandal Delince, Kurt Samuel, Wilfred Ruck, and Donovan Stewart (3:26.60).
