**Update: May 4 at 12:00 p.m. **- Due to a correction of a
scoring error in the men's high jump, St. Thomas Aquinas men's team
has been awarded one point and is named Co-Champions with Queens
College. The release has been adjusted accordingly.
Queens, N.Y. – The Georgian Court women
took the top spot in while Queens College and St. Thomas Aquinas
College men were named Co-Champions at the East Coast Conference
Outdoor Track and Field Championship meets on Sunday afternoon.
Georgian Court outpaced second place finisher, the University of
the District of Columbia, by a score of 211 – 162 to win the
two-day event and capture their first ever ECC Championship.
The difference in the women's championship outcome was Georgian
Court's dominance in the Field events. The Lions earned 106 points,
just over half their total, in just seven Field events. In four
different events; shot put, discus, high jump, and hammer throw;
three different Georgian Court athletes finished in the top six to
earn points.
In all, seven different events were won by the Lions in the meet
with Alyssa Hudgins leading the way by winning the shot put (13.85
meters), discus throw (40.01 meters), and the hammer throw (46.32
meters). Other Georgian Court top-finishers include Laura
Gemignani (javelin – 34.98 meters), Meagan Kelly (3,000 meter
stepeplechase – 12:19.59), and Chanel Rogers, who won both
the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.78) and the 100 meter hurdles
(15.01).
University of the District of Columbia was also impressive in
their second place showing, also topping seven different events
with Kaydian Jones winning three herself. Jones topped the
100 meter dash (12.59), the 200 meter run (25.38), the long jump
(5.76 meters) and was part of the Firebirds' 4 x 400 meter relay
team with Marlena Wright, Jerily Benjamin, and Kayla Green that
also came in first.
The men's meet was closely contested with Queens and St. Thomas
Aquinas deadlocked at 165.
The meet came down to the final event of the day, the 4 x 400
meter relay. Trailing by four points and with Queens guaranteed at
least third place and six points in the event, St. Thomas Aquinas
needed a first-place showing to be named Co-Champions. The
Spartans' team of Mike Abelard, Frankie Colon, Ed Oswald, and
George Erazo were first across the line in a time of 3:24.83 to
clinch a tie for the championship.
St. Thomas Aquinas actually outpaced Queens in individual and
relay titles by a margin of seven to six but like the women's
championship, the Field events turned out to be pivotal in deciding
the champion. Queens scored 67 points, which included first place
finishes in the shot put by Vincent Fratto and the Discus and
Hammer by Angel Alers-Rosario, compared to just nine for St. Thomas
Aquinas in the Field events.
Other top finishers for Queens include Kurt Samuel, who won the
800 meter run in a time of 1:54.61, and Tyler Bay, who topped both
the 5,000 meter run (16:04.42) and the 10,000 meter run
(33:50.28).
St. Thomas Aquinas' was led by Erazo's impressive showing which
included crossing the finish line first in the 400 meter hurdles
(59.41) and the 400 meter run (49.71) and also as part of the
winning 4 x 100 meter relay team (43.46) with Rosnack Malivert,
Mike Abelard, and Frankie Colon. Erazo came in second in the 200
meter run (22.65) and third in the 100 meter dash (11.82) as
well.
