Central Islip, N.Y. - Sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah of C.W. Post has been named the 2012 East Coast
Conference Softball Player of the Year as voted on by the
league’s coaches. Junior pitcher Kelley Jansen of Molloy was
named the Pitcher of the Year, while freshman catcher Alyson
Dzierzynski from C.W. Post captured the Rookie of the Year honor.
After capturing the conference’s Rookie of the Year award in
2011, Hagenah put together another tremendous season this year. A
force in the middle of the Pioneers’ lineup, she ranks in the
top-five in the conference in almost every offensive category
including leading the way in RBI (48), runs (52), total bases
(107), and walks (30). She also hit .381 and blasted 11 homeruns,
good for second in the conference. Hagenah was stellar in the field
as well, posting a 1.000 fielding percentage in 28 conference
games.
Jansen was dominant in the circle for Molloy this season, helping
lead the Lions to the regular season championship. In 28
appearances in the circle, Jansen amassed a 20-7 record and a 1.46
earned run average. She also set down an eye popping 252 batters on
strikes to rank fourth in all of Division II and lead the
conference with 10.8 strikeouts per seven innings. Jansen’s
win, strikeout, and ERA totals were all good for second in the
conference.
A three-time Rookie of the Week selection, Dzierzynski was a major
contributor in the Pioneers potent lineup. She currently boasts a
.365 batting average to go along with nine homeruns and 43 RBI.
Those numbers, as well as her hits (53), runs (27), total bases
(88), and slugging percentage (.595) totals, all rank in the
top-ten in the ECC. Dzierzynski also excelled behind the plate,
tossing out eight of 14 attempted base stealers.
For the fourth straight year, Susan Cassidy-Lyke of Molloy College
has been selected Coach of the Year by her peers. This
season, Cassidy-Lyke guided the Lions to a 39-10 overall record and
a 25-3 mark in conference play to claim the top seed in the ECC
Tournament. The Lions are currently ranked second in the East
Region as they head into post-season play.
