Lady Spartan Softball Team Works to Strike Out Cystic Fibrosis

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team has raised money to help with research and awareness of Cystic Fibrosis.  The Lady Spartans presented a $300.00 check to Mrs. Alison Place during last weeks double header against C.W. Post.  The Place family were victims to this terrible disease losing their son/brother, Jimmy.

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that causes mucus to build up and clog some of the organs in the body, particularly the lungs and pancreas.  There are approximately 30,000 children and adults living in the United States with this life-threatening disease.  While there is currently no cure, researchers are working towards creating drugs, therapies, and a specific type of nutrition in order to improve the quality of life for those living with CF.

The importance of raising awareness for this disease came when a teammate of ours lost her younger brother, Jimmy.  Seeing her strength break through during such a difficult time for herself and her family inspired us to help prevent other families from suffering a loss like Jimmy's.  After meeting with members of a local chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, we determined steps we can take to raise awareness and money for the cause.

The women's softball team hosted a bake sale in October where we were able to raise money and spread awareness of the disease throughout the campus.  The senior class also organized a kickball fundraiser in October to help spread the word.  On April 21, 2012 the softball hosted their final fundraiser of the season which was Cystic Fibrosis Day at Spartan Field.  The women wore blue and yellow shirts in honor of Jimmy and all those who have lost their fight or continue to fight this awful disease.  Members of the softball team presented a check for $300.00 to Mrs. Alison Place, mother of Jimmy, which will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

In total, members of the Women's softball team and senior class committee were able to raise over $1000.00 which will be donated.  Members of the softball team also plan to do a walk at Albertus Magnus High School on June 3rd, 2012 to benefit the foundation.
