Flushing, N.Y. - The championship trophy will remain in Flushing for another year after the Queens College men's tennis team took down ECC Championship debutants Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday (Apr. 27) by a 4-0 score at the Queens College Tennis Center.
The Knights gutted out the doubles point thanks to second-tandem Richard Sec and Kareem Rashad's 6-4 victory over Paul Voigt and Enej Hasicevic. Queens went up by a 1-0 margin with this win after splitting the other two doubles matches with the Spartans. Cosme Jubera and Lucas Demuth scored a 6-1 win at the top spot over Tim Fleerkamp and Luke Taplin shortly before third-tandem Jose Zurro and Mariano Biblioni fell to Marcel Volz and Mitchell Harrison by a 6-2 margin.
Once the championship went into singles play, however, Queens kicked it into over-drive to re-claim the conference crown. Zurro's 6-2, 6-1 win at sixth-singles over Taplin opened up a 2-0 lead for the Knights as Sec closed out Hasicevic at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win to bring Queens within one point of the title. Mere minutes later, Jubera served out a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Volz to set off the celebration.
