Mercy Falls Davis & Elkins in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – Despite a career-high 10 saves from sophomore Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the No. 4 seeded Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 5 seeded Davis and Elkins College in an NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship Second Round matchup on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (12-3-5) see their season end in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four seasons. The loss is Mercy's first home loss of the season. Mercy ends their season as ECC Champions for the fifth time in program history and the second time in three seasons. The Senators (16-2-1) advance to the Third Round for the second straight year.

Elvestad made a career-high 10 saves to take the loss. Junior Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College) had a team-high two shots on goal and sophomore Luis Silva (Esposende, Portugal/Knox College) also had a shot on goal.

Davis and Elkins were led by Alex Estrada-Avila who had a goal and an assist and by Christhian Bosquez and Haruki Yamazaki who also scored. Beltran Fernandez made three saves to earn the win.

Elvestad made five saves in the first 17 minutes of the game to keep the game scoreless. Elvestad was called for a foul just inside the box in the 20th minute and Estrada-Avila connected on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Senators a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.

Elvestad stopped four more shots to keep the game 1-0 until Davis & Elkins scored in the 75th minute to make it 2-0. Yamazaki found the back of the net off an assist from Estrada-Avila. Bosquez netted the final Senators goal in the 81st minute to give Davis & Elkins a 3-0 lead. The Senators led the rest of the way en route to the win.

Davis and Elkins held a 22-5 edge in shots and a 13-3 edge in shots on goal. Davis and Elkins held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
