LIU Post Tripped Up by Adelphi During Snowy East Region Final

Brookville, N.Y. – On a snowy, frigid day in Brookville, the LIU Post men's soccer team saw its 2018 season end with a 2-0 setback to the top-seeded Adelphi University Panthers during the East Region Championship at Pioneer Soccer Park on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Adelphi captured the NCAA Division II East Region championship and advances to Saturday's quarterfinal round against West Chester University at Pioneer Soccer Park at 1:00 p.m.

It was a goal during just the second minute of action that set the tone during Thursday's match. A loose ball in the Pioneer penalty area led to a clearance attempt by the LIU Post back line, but a low clearance was settled down by Patrick Guier and shot through the box into the lower left corner of the frame to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage early. LIU Post garnered just one shot attempt during the first half and the 1-0 score remained through the intermission.

The snow began to fall late in the first stanza, and by the start of the second half a layer of powder had coated the playing surface. Just over five minutes into the half, Taylor Kaczynski found James Thristino inside the box and a flicked header to the far post gave Adelphi a two-goal lead. Not before long, the snow accumulations piled up to create a solid sheet of snow across the playing surface, making the Pioneer comeback effort that much more challenging.

Graduate student Lukas Ostermann had a great look at goal early in the second half but a shot from the left side of the penalty area just trickled wide of the right post, and senior Vittorio Argeri saw a similar result later in the half as he just misfired on a shot with 10 minutes remaining. The Panther defense took care of the rest, helping Adelphi advance to the round of eight on Saturday.

LIU Post closes out the season with a 14-5-1 overall record, winning its fourth-consecutive East Coast Conference title.
