Austin, Texas - Senior Darian Hooker
(Washington, D.C.) of the NYIT men's basketball team became the
program's first-ever Capital One® Academic All-American, as it
was announced Wednesday afternoon by the College Sports Information
Director's of America.
Hooker joins the NYIT elite ranks of Julian Marcon (B.S. '13) of
men's tennis, Vinny Caccavale (B.S. '14) of men's soccer, Matt
DiDonna (B.S. '14) of men's soccer, and Javier Gallardo of men's
soccer, who have all received the honor for their respective
sport.
Hooker, who received second team accolades, leads NYIT, the East
Coast Conference, and the East Region with 27.9 points per game,
all while pursuing a master's degree in interdisciplinary studies
with an emphasis in communication arts. For the Fall 2014 semester,
Hooker earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and completed his
undergraduate degree with a 3.49 GPA.
In the ECC, he also leads with 5.0 assists per game (fifth in the
region) and an 87.0 free throw percentage. Playing in 22 of 25
games for the Bears thus far, Hooker has produced double-digit
point tallies in all 22 games, with two 40+ point games and nine
30+ games. He reached an all-time high of 43 points on the road at
Bridgeport on February 7 and now ranks third all-time on the NYIT
"Points in a Single Game" list.
Hooker was named the Metropolitan Basketball Writer's Association
Co-Player of the Week three-times and four times he received ECC
Player of the Week honors. His first MBWA honor came on the heels
of Hooker's buzzer-beating three-pointer at Daemen College that
ended the longest home game win streak in the region and NCAA
DII.
