Staten Island, N.Y. - The Holy Family University men's and women's indoor track and field teams. as well as the Georgian Court men's squad, won East Coast Conference Championships on Sunday evening at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Holy Family's women's team repeats as champions. With a share of the title (the first time since the 2013 ECC Outdoor Championships two teams tied for the ECC Championship), Georgian Court has now won four straight ECC crowns, while Holy Family's men earn their first-ever championship.
Both championships came down to the final event of the day, the 4x400 meter relay. On the men’s side, Holy Family trailed Georgian Court by two points heading into the relay but came away with a win in a time of 3:22.12 to earn 10 points. Georgian Court finished second to earn eight points and the tie.
Holy Family was leading Georgian Court heading into the women’s 4x400m by just 4.33 points. The Tigers relay squad of Nyoki Jones, Ariel Salkey, Kenisha Greenwood, and Shania LeMaitre set a meet record of 3:54.68 to clinch a repeat.
On the women’s side, the Tigers had four event winners on the way to the title. In addition to the 4x400 squad, Shania LeMaitre (800m – 2:17.14), Korryn Braxton-Young (shot put – 11.79m) and the distance medley relay squad of Teresa Faust, Desiree Draper, Shania LeMaitre, and Emma McNamee (12:43.59) were all victorious.
The Tigers also accumulated points with eight other top-three finishes to earn 12 total medals on the day.
Holy Family had more event winners than Georgian Court on the men’s side, outpacing the Lions six to four. The Tigers event winners were Kouto Anyika (200m – 22.08 & 400m – 50.06), Terrane Jones (60m hurdles – 8.30), Nishorn Pierre (high jump – 2.03m & long jump – 6.94m), and the 4x400m relay squad of Kouto Anyika, Nafis Zollifcoffer, Jade Acevedo, and Tyler Wesley (3:22.12).
Georgian Court got wins from Xavier Seals (800m – 1:59.31), Jan Volkmar (pole vault – 4.80), Jeshurun Devero (triple jump – 15.04m), and Robbie Babson (shot put – 16.00m).
Holy Family added points with seven other medalists, giving them 13 overall. Georgian Court had 11 additional medalists to outpace Holy Family with 15 total.
Seven meet records fell on the day and one record was tied. On the women’s side, Ayesha Jarrett of District of Columbia set a new mark in the 500m (1:16.43) while the Georgian Court duo of Aniyah Russell (long jump – 6.07m) and Shanae Rayside (triple jump – 11.91m) leaped to new records. As previously mentioned, the Holy Family 4x400m relay squad also set a new meet standard.
Three records were set in field events on the men’s side. Georgian Court’s Jan Volkmar (pole vault – 4.80m) and Jeshurun Devero (triple jump – 15.04m) and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Emmanuel Mena Jimenez (weight throw – 18.24m) set new marks. Holy Family’s Terrance Jones also tied the conference championship record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.30.
