Karker and Russell Named ECC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year

West Babylon, N.Y. – Ryan Karker (Greece, N.Y.) of Roberts Wesleyan and Aniyah Russell (Jackson, N.J.) of Georgian Court have been chosen by the league’s coaches as the East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year for their respective gender.

Karker, a four-time ECC Athlete of the Week honoree, claims the Men’s Athlete of the Year honor. Karker competed in seven meets throughout the season and earned no worse than second place finishes in all but one meet. He won events at the Houghton December Classic (600m – 1:22.85 & mile – 4:26.69), RIT January Friday Meet (800m – 1:55.29), Nazareth Conference Tune-Up (800m – 1:51.98), and was the ECC Champion in the 500m (1:05.65). Despite a 13th place finish, Karker also qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship when he ran the 800m in a time of 1:50.38 at the Boston University Last Chance Meet. Karker ended up finishing in 16th place at the national meet, finishing with a time of 1:52.42.

On the women's side, Russell claimed the honor after excelling in the long jump throughout the season. During the season, she competed in the event in six meets and won four of them while finishing no lower than third in the other two she did not win. Her winning leap of 6.05m at the Boston University Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invite also qualified Russell for the NCAA Division II National Championship. While at the national meet, she finished fifth and earned All-American honors with a program-record jump of 6.06m Late in the season, Russell competed twice in the triple jump as well, winning once and coming in third in the other.

Russell was also selected as the ECC Women's Indoor Championship Most Outstanding Athlete with her first place finishes in the long jump (5.78m) and the triple jump (11.29m) to contribute 20 points to the Lions’ runner-up finish.

Jan Volkmar of Georgian Court earned the Most Outstanding Athlete of the championship meet on the men’s side. Volkmar shattered the meet record in winning the pole vault with a mark of 4.78m. He also placed fifth in the 60m hurdles (8.88) and sixth in the shot put (12.99m) to score in three different events.

Mike Murawski of Georgian Court earned the ECC Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honors on the men's side after the Lions won both the league’s championship for the third straight season. Dwight Brandon of Holy Family earns the Coach of the Year award for the women after leading the Tigers to their first-ever ECC title.

The ECC also announces the All-Conference finishers from the championship meet. The top two finishers in each event were named First Team All-Conference, while the third and fourth place finishers earned Second Team All-Conference distinction. A list of all winners can be found below.
