Staten Island, N.Y. - Georgian Court's men and Holy Family's women earned East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. It's the third straight title for Georgian Court, while Holy Family claimed their first-ever ECC Championship.
Georgian Court's men's team was dominant on the way to a third straight title and fourth in five seasons. They topped runner-up Roberts Wesleyan by a 174-88 margin.
The Lions won 10 of the meet’s 18 events. Individual winners for Georgian Court were Wayne Robinson (400m – 50.45), Chukwuebizie Anuamadi (800m – 1:56.2), Xavier Seals (1000m – 2:34.94), Kyle Spector (mile – 4:30.55), Henry Jean-Michel (60m hurdles – 8.54), Jan Volkmar (pole vault – 4.78m), Jeshurun Devero (triple jump – 14.07m), and Alejandro Valdez (shot put - 14.82m).
Georgian Court also was victorious in both relays taking the Distance Medley (10:47.77 – Riley Keffer, Terrell Moore, Nolan Czech, Kevin Knoetig) and the 4x400m (Wayne Robinson, Domenico Darcy, Xavier Seals, Chukwuebizie Anuamadi).
In addition, the Lions compiled nine other top-three finishes to earn 25 total medals on the day.
On the women's side, the meet was much closer, with the final outcome in doubt until the day’s final event. Holy Family ended up squeaking by Georgian Court by a 107-102 margin after coming in first place in the 4x400m relay (4:00.36 – Nyoki Jones, Kahdia Jones, Shania LaMaitre, Kai Lash).
The Tigers won four other events on the day and also accumulated six other medalists on the way to the top spot. First-place finishers for the Tigers were Kahdia Jones (400m – 58.97), Nyoki Kones (500m – 1:19.49), Shania LaMaitre (800m – 2:21.68), and Korryn Braxton-Young (shot put – 11.73m).
A total of five meet records fell on the day, with three coming on the women’s side and two on the men’s. St. Thomas Aquinas’ Skylar Moreno earned the only track record on the day, crossing the line in a record time of 2:59.98 to win the 1000m.
The other records came in field events. Both Julia Kirschnick (3.50m) and Jan Volkmar (4.78m) set new marks in the pole vault. Georgian Court’s Aniyah Russell tied her own record in the long jump (5.78m), while Emmanuel Mena-Jimenez of St. Thomas Aquinas made history with a new ECC-record toss of 17.16m in the men’s weight throw.
