West Babylon, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas' St. Jacob Diodonet (West Milford, N.J.) and LIU Post's Alexandria Okon (Laurel, Md.) have earned the coaches' vote as the East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year for their respective gender.
By earning the Indoor Athlete of the Year honor for the fourth straight year, Diodonet has made conference history. He becomes only the second student-athlete in any conference sport to win the Player/Athlete of the Year honor in each of their four years of eligibility. Dowling volleyball standout and ECC Hall of Famer, Maja Potpara, was previously the only other student-athlete in conference history to accomplish the feat.
A three-time ECC Athlete of the Week, Diodonet earned All-Region status in the 60m, 200m, and 400m by finishing among the top-five fastest times in the region in each event. He ranked fourth in the 60m (6.97), second in the 200m (21.53), and first in the 400m (47.76). His time in the 400m was 16th in the country, earning him a fourth straight spot in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship.
Okon earns the first major award of her career after a standout season for the Pioneers. Okon was among the ECC and East Region's best in the 800m. She won the event at the ECC Championship (2:18.21) and had the fourth fastest time in the region with a win at the Spartan Invitational (2:17.78). Okon also ranked No. 10 in the East with a 58.34 time in the 400m. Another highlight of Okon's season was the Wagner College Shootout in December when she came in second in the 600m (1:38.93) and helped the Pioneers to a first place showing in the 4x400m relay (4:08.88).
Diodonet was also selected as the Men's Most Outstanding Athlete of the ECC Championship. For the fourth straight year, Diodonet was the ECC Champion in both the 200m (21.82) and 400m (48.11) dashes setting meet record times in both events. In addition, he was part of STAC's winning 4x400m relay team (3:22.09) and also had a fifth place showing in the 60m dash (7.10).
Georgian Court's Aretha Edwards earns the Women's Most Outstanding Athlete of the Championship meet honor. Edwards amassed 25 points on the evening to help the Lions win their first-ever ECC Indoor Championship. She won the 200m (25.52) and came in second in the 400m (58.90). Edwards also claimed a third place showing in the 60m (7.81) and anchored the fourth place 4x400m relay team that clinched a tight victory in the overall team standings over Roberts Wesleyan.
Mike Murawski of Georgian Court earned the ECC Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honors on both the men's and women's side after the Lions won both titles at the championship meet.
The ECC also announces the All-Conference finishers from the championship meet. The top two finishers in each event were named First Team All-Conference, while the third and fourth place finishers earned Second Team All-Conference distinction. A list of all winners can be found below.
