Bridgeport Sees Season Come to a Close in NCAA East Regional

Rindge, N.H. - The University of Bridgeport baseball team saw its 2016 season come to an end on Sunday afternoon in the program's first-ever NCAA Division II Regional, as the fifth-seed Purple Knights fell to the second-seed and No. 4/8 in the nation, Southern New Hampshire University Penmen at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire.  UB closes out is season at 28-24-1, and SNHU moves onto to face St. Thomas Aquinas College in another NCAA elimination game with a 48-6 mark.

The Purple Knights got off to a good start on Sunday when sophomore Bobby Schryver (Ansonia, Conn.) crushed his first collegiate home run to right-center field to give Bridgeport a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning.

SNHU would answer back score two runs in the top of the third to knot the contest at 2-2.

The score would remain 2-2 until the top of the eighth inning when the Penmen scored three runs on a two-RBI double by Derek Bauer off losing pitcher, UB starter Dakota Edwards (Jr., Turlock, Calif.) and another double that brought home Bauer by Ryan Gendron off Bridgeport reliever Denis Lyman (Jr., Kingston, N.Y.).  Edwards, who finishes the season at 6-7 overall, worked 7.1 innings in which he allowed 11 hits and seven runs; while striking out seven and not issuing a walk.

Jake Walkinshaw (4-0) picked up the win in relief for Southern New Hampshire working three perfect innings in which he struck out three batters.

Bridgeport senior Alnaydo Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a run scored.
