Rindge, N.H. - Junior Cody McPartland threw a complete game shut out for a 4-0 win over No. 2 seeded Southern New Hampshire University this afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA East Regional Tournament.
The Golden Lions advance in the winners bracket and improve to 28-23 on the season. The loss moves the Penmen to 45-6 and they will face elimination tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
Sophomore Robert Morse broke up a pitcher's duel between SNHU's Tim Viehoff and McPartland in the top of the seventh with a 395 foot blast over the left centerfield fence. Two batters later, senior Chris Appell singled to center and was followed by a base hit to right by Vinny Orlando to put two runners on. A fly out recorded the second out of the inning, but sophomore Tim Going came up with his third hit of the game in a double to right center to bring in Appell. Sophomore Kenneth Fils-Aime followed suit with a 2 RBI single to put the Golden Lions ahead 4-0.
That was plenty for McPartland as he scattered six hits while striking out nine without issuing a walk. The right-hander allowed just one base runner over the final three innings improving to 7-4 on the season.
Morse finished perfect at the plate with a 4 for 4 performance including an RBI and a run scored. Tim Going was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.
SNHU's Tim Viehoff was tagged with the loss allowing three runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work.
The Golden Lions will play tomorrow at 7:00 PM and will face the winner of fellow East Coast Conference teams Molloy College and St, Thomas Aquinas College.
