Philadelphia, Pa. - Three East Coast Conference student athletes have been named to the 2011 Daktronics Baseball All-East Region Team. Carlos Guzman and Chuck Fontana of Molloy, along with Peter Barrows of Bridgeport, all earned spots on the First Team.
Guzman, the 2011 ECC Rookie of the Year, lands a spot on the
Daktronics All-Region squad in his first season at Molloy. The left
handed hitting outfielder finished third in the ECC in hitting with
a .356 batting average, while also topping the conference in hits
(67), runs (42), and stolen bases (28).
Fontana, who was named the ECC Pitcher of the Year, earns
Daktronics All-Region First Team recognition as well. He finished
the 2011 campaign with a record of 9-1 and a 1.69 ERA. Fontana led
the ECC in innings pitched, strikeouts, and strikeouts per nine
innings as well.
Barrows joins Guzman and Fontana on the First Team after also
being named to the ECC All-Conference First Team. Barrows led
Bridgeport to a program record 31 wins on the season and a spot in
the ECC Championship game with a team high .353 batting average, 16
doubles, 31 RBI, and 20 stolen bases.
St. Anselm College sophomore first baseman Robert Kelly and
Franklin Pierce University sophomore pitcher Ryan Thompson have
been named the East Region Player of the Year and East Region
Pitcher of Year respectively.
Kelly, the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year and
First Team All-Conference selection, plays first base and pitches
for Saint Anselm. He was among the league leaders in
virtually every statistical category. He leads the conference in
home runs (12) and slugging percentage (.685). Kelly is also second
in the league in batting average, hitting .364 and total bases
(113). He is fourth in the NE-10 in doubles (15), fifth in
runs batted in (41), and on base percentage (.446) and seventh in
hits (60). Earlier this week, the Rancho Santa Margarita,
California native was recently named the NCBWA East Region Player
of the Year.
Thompson, the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Year
and First Team All-Conference selection, is a transfer from the
University of Connecticut. Thompson was a dominating presence
on the mound for the Ravens this year, producing a 10-1 record in
12 starts. Thompson’s ten wins are tied for the league lead
in the Northeast-10, and his 113 strikeouts is the second highest
total in the league. Thompson is also among the leaders nationally
in a number of categories. His ERA is currently 1.05, which puts
him fifth nationally, and his 11.83 strikeouts per nine innings are
eighth best in the country. Thompson’s ten wins is the
fifth highest total in the nation and his 113 strikeouts rank third
in all of Division II. The Calgary, Alberta native was also
named the NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Year earlier this
week.
