ROCHESTER, N.Y. – For the ninth year in a row, Roberts Wesleyan claimed the East Coast Conference Cross Country Championship titles, as the Redhawk men and women finished first at the 2023 ECC Cross Country Championship meet on Saturday morning at Roberts Wesleyan's Matt St. James Cross Country Trails. Both out of Roberts Wesleyan, senior Owen White won the men's individual 8k title in 24:44.0 while junior Acacia Barber took home the women's individual 5k title in 18:30.4 to each earn ECC Runner of the Year honors.
In the men's race, five of the first seven runners to cross the finish line were from Roberts Wesleyan, as White was followed by Redhawk teammates Jackson Doran (24:58.8) and Blake Kasper (25:01.0) in second and third, respectively. Zachary Hall (5th, 25:44.0) and Theodore Pintabona (7th, 26:03.8) closed the scoring for the Redhawks and Ryan Karker (10th, 26:19.4) and Jaxon Bunting (14th, 26:52.6) finished as Roberts Wesleyan's No. 6 and No. 7 runners as the host champions turned in an 18-point showing and seven All-Conference performances.
Daemen followed in second place, as Jonathan Moote (4th, 25:31.0), CJ Johnson (6th, 25:58.5), Connor O'Brien (8th, 26:16.9), Aidan Kincaid (9th, 26:19.1), and Phillip Ceccarelli (11th, 26:19.4) led the Wildcats to 38 points and five All-Conference performances. Finishing with the fastest time by a first-year runner, Johnson earned ECC Rookie of the Year recognition.
The women's race saw Barber, Rachel Horner-Richardson (2nd, 18:41.6), and Kylee Odell (3rd, 18:49.7) go 1-2-3 before Zoe Perkins (9th, 19:11.1) and Lydia Roselund (14th, 19:46.7) closed the scoring for the Redhawks, who finished with 29 points and five All-Conference honorees. Julianna Lewis (18th, 20:32.2) and Gianna Tribotte (20th, 20:40.6) finished as the Redhawks' No. 6 and No. 7 runners.
Daemen followed in second place, as Camryn Bailey (7th, 18:58.8), Hannah Thomas (8th, 19:04.2), Patsy Oberholzer (10th, 19:11.5), Courtney Merrill (11th, 19:14.6), and Emma Cain (13th, 19:36.7) led the Wildcats to 49 points and five All-Conference performances.
Also of note out of the women's race was St. Thomas Aquinas first-year Zoe Merryman, who finished fifth (18:54.2) to earn ECC Rookie of the Year honors, and the D'Youville pair of Lainie Smith (4th, 18:51.5) and Lydia Smith (18:55.2), who finished in the top 10 for the Saints.
Roberts Wesleyan head coach Andrew Dorr was named the Men's and Women's ECC Coach of the Year after leading the Redhawks to a first-place finish in each race. This is the 10th consecutive year he has won the honor for both genders and the 11th straight year in the women's race.
