ECC Women's Basketball Report - Week 15

Player of the Week
Sara Pfeiffer, D'Youville (So, G - Olean, N.Y.)
Pfeiffer had a stellar week for the Saints, scoring team-high points in both games en route to a 1-1 week. The Olean, N.Y. native started the weekend off with 35 points in the Saints' 83-74 win over Queens Thursday night in NYC. Pfeiffer went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc and 6-for-7 from the free-throw range to pace the Saints to the impressive win. Just two days later, Pfeiffer set a single-game conference record for made three-pointers, sinking 11 against Molloy, en route to a career-high and ECC season-high 45 points. Pfeiffer finished the weekend with 40.0 points per game, shooting 61.5 percent from beyond the arc, 85.7 percent from the free-throw line, and 58.0 percent from field goal range. She also was credited with 12 rebounds and two steals through the two games.

Defensive Player of the Week
Tiara Filbert, Daemen (Sr, G - Batavia, N.Y.)
Filbert averaged 2.0 steals per game while helping Daemen to a pair of wins that clinched the ECC regular season title. She swiped three steals in Thursday's win over Molloy. Her efforts helped Daemen limit their opponents to just 31 percent shooting overall and 6 percent three-point shooting.

Rookie of the Week
Destiny Ryles, Dist. Columbia (Fr, G - Windsor Mill, Md.)
Ryles averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals, and 2.5 assists per game to help the Firebirds split a pair of conference games on the week. In the game against STAC, she led all scorers with 23 points and added six steals, five rebounds, three assists, and a block. In the win over Mercy, she had 14 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Gabriella Aspuru, Molloy (Sr, G - Farmingville, N.Y.)
Aspuru averaged 19 points per game, tallied five blocks, and five steals helping Molloy go 1-1 last week. Against Daemen, Aspuru tallied a team-high 22 points, four steals, and one block. The senior tallied 16 points, four blocks, and one steal in the win over D’Youville.

Latavia Jackson, Dist. Columbia (So, G - Waldorf, Md.)
Jackson averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game to help the Firebirds split a pair in the last two games of the regular season. In the game against STAC, she scored 20 points and added four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. In UDC's win over Mercy, she posted a game-high 21 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

Stephanie McBride, Bridgeport (Jr, C - Brooklyn, N.Y.)
McBride closed out a fantastic 2021-22 season on Saturday with a double-double 19 points and 15 rebounds to help the University of Bridgeport post a 66-65 overtime win over Roberts Wesleyan in the team's only action of the final week of the season. She also blocked one shot in the victory. For the season, Stephanie finished averaging an impressive double-double per game of 12.9 points and 11,1 rebounds per outing, plus she blocked a total of 42 shots in 22 games played.

Katie Titus, Daemen (Sr, F - Penfield, N.Y.)
Averaged 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 50% both overall and from three-point range in a 2-0 week that helped Daemen clinch their third straight ECC regular season title... had arguably the best game of her career in a first-place vs. second-place showdown with Molloy when she scored 37 points (one shy of her career-high), grabbed six boards, dished a season-high five assists, and totaled three steals and three blocks... tied the program's NCAA era record by making seven three-pointers in the win... also recorded the 1,400th point of her career, becoming just the ninth player in program history to do so... finished the regular season as the ECC scoring champion, averaging 20.7 points per game.

ECC Team Notes

Bridgeport: The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team finished the season with a 9-15 overall record and a 6-11 ECC mark. Samirah Henderson led the team in scoring averaging 15.6 points per game. Janiece Loney also finished in double-digit scoring at 13.3 ppg., along with Stephanie McBride at 12.9 ppg. and Brianna Meekins at 12.6 points per outing. McBride had a fine 2021-22 season finishing averaging a double-double as she pulled down 11.1 rebounds per game this season and blocked 42 shots.

Daemen: Daemen secured the program's third straight ECC regular season title with a pair of wins last week and will enter the postseason with records of 18-4 (overall) and 16-1 (conference). Daemen is the No. 1 seed for the ECC Championship and will host the semifinal and final rounds this weekend. The Wildcats' clinched the top seed with a 71-54 win at Molloy last Thursday and followed that with a dominant 65-39 win at Queens. They'll await the winner of Wednesday's opening round game between fourth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan and fifth-seeded Mercy. Senior forward Katie Titus finished the regular season as the only ECC player averaging at least 20 points per game.

District of Columbia: The Firebirds went 1-1 last week, falling to St. Thomas Aquinas and beating Mercy, to finish the regular season with a record of 13-14 (9-9 ECC). UDC earned the No. 6 seed and will make their first appearance in the ECC Championship since 2016 when they take on No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas in the First Round on Wednesday.

D'Youville: The Saints went 1-1 over the weekend to finish out the regular season, securing an impressive win over Queens Thursday night. Sara Pfeiffer set a single-game conference record for made three-pointers, sinking 11 against Molloy Saturday afternoon. The Olean, N.Y. native scored a team-high 80 points over the weekend to finish the regular season. The Saints will be competing as the No. 3 seed in the USCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Tournament.

Mercy: The Mercy College women's basketball team went 1-1 on the week with a win over CSI and a loss to UDC. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall who averaged a team-high 14.5 points per game. Mercy resumes action on Wednesday when they play at Roberts Wesleyan in an ECC Championship First Round matchup at 7 p.m.

Molloy: The Lions went 1-1 last week and finished the regular season 16-9 overall and 13-5 in ECC play to earn the No. 2 seed in the ECC Championship. Molloy fell to Daemen, 71-54, Thursday, February 24, and defeated D'Youville, 77-66, Saturday, February 26. Senior Gabriella Aspuru tallied 22 points, and graduate student Safiyyah Lee added 13 points against the Wildcats. In the win over the Saints, sophomore Trinity Hudson tallied a career-high 27 points and 16 rebounds, and Aspuru netted 16 points.

Queens: The Knights concluded the season 21-22 by hosting Senior Day against Daemen College on Saturday (Feb. 26) afternoon.

Roberts Wesleyan: The Roberts women's basketball team lost to Bridgeport, 66-65 to close out the regular season.

Staten Island: The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team fell to Mercy College, 61-44. The Dolphins' final game of the season game against STAC which they fell to them by a score of, 62-54.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team (13-14, 12-6 ECC) put together a perfect 2-0 week, defeating both District of Columbia (74-61) and Staten Island (62-54) last week The Spartans return to action on March 2 against UDC (7:00 p.m.) in the ECC Tournament Quarterfinals at Aquinas Hall Gym.
