ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week Six

Player of the Week
Jahmir Marable-Williams, District of Columbia (Jr, G - Philadelphia, Pa.)
Marable-Williams averaged a triple-double with 14.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 10.0 assists per game to help the Firebirds split a pair of games last week. He shot 64.7 percent from the floor (11-for-17) and also added 1.5 steals per game. In a one point loss to Frostburg St., Marable-Williams posted 14 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. He followed with a 15 point, nine rebound, 12 assist, three steal performance in an ECC win over D'Youville. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Tyler Carey, Queens (Sr, C - Bay Shore, N.Y.)
Carey was stellar helping the Knights pick up their first conference win of the season and first win over Molloy at home since the 2015-16 season. The Bay Shore native tallied 11 rebounds (career-high), four blocks (career-high), and two steals while tallying seven points. Carey's dunk at 1:55 ignited at a 10-3 run to force overtime before Queens ran away with a 76-68 victory.

Rookie of the Week
Messiah Mallory, Staten Island (Fr, F/C - Watervliet N.Y.)
Mallory averaged 12.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game in a 1-1 week for Staten Island. He began the week with 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two blocks in a loss to Felician. He followed by helping the Dolphins to an ECC win over D'Youville with a 15 point, 14 rebounds, four assist performance.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Jamal Barnes, St. Thomas Aquinas (So, G - Temple Hills, Md.)
Barnes averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists over two games last week. Barnes posted 22 points against Bridgeport and then five points versus Roberts Wesleyan. The sophomore guard shot 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from the floor, 50.0 percent (7-for-16) from three, and 100.0 percent from the free-throw line. He also added seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Malcolm Moye, Bridgeport (Jr, F - Hartford, Conn.)
Moye helped UB go 1-1 on the week, as he averaged an impressive 23.0 points and 9,0 rebounds per game, plus shot 67.9 percent from the floor connecting on 19-of-28 field goal attempts. After scoring 16 points at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday night, Malcolm followed that up with a UB career-best 30 points in a 96-81 win over Mercy on Sunday. Against the Mavericks, he also grabbed nine rebounds, and had two steals, two assists, and blocked a shot. On the week, he also accumulated a total of four steals, three assists, and one block. So far this season, Moye is averaging 13.8 points per game.

Andrew Sischo, Daemen (Gr, C - Guilderland, N.Y.)

Registered his ninth straight double-double (70th of his career) with 20 points and 17 rebounds in an 83-80 loss to regionally-ranked Franklin Pierce.

Brandon Wilson, Mercy (Jr, G - Farmingdale, N.J.)

Wilson averaged a team-high 22.5 points per game on 53.8 percent shooting with 4.5 rebounds per game in two games this week. The junior opened the week with a career-high 22 points with six rebounds against Roberts Wesleyan on Friday. The guard ended the week with a new career-high 23 points on 11-of-18 shooting with three rebounds at Bridgeport on Sunday.

ECC Team Notes

Bridgeport: The Bridgeport men's basketball team heads into the Holiday Break at 4-8 overall and an even 2-2 in the ECC. Tim Dawson leads the Purple Knights in scoring averaging 14.3 points per game so far in 2021-22. He is joined in double figures by Malcolm Moye, who netted a career-best 30 points in a win over Mercy on Sunday, at 13.8 ppg, and Mason Williams at 11.0 points per game. Nemanja Zubac leads Bridgeport on the glass averaging 6.4 rebounds per game, plus he leads the team with 19 block shots so far this season.

Daemen: For the second time in the last three seasons, Daemen hosted a game on Buffalo's biggest stage, falling 83-80 to regionally ranked Franklin Pierce at KeyBank Center. The game was played as part of the Big 4 Basketball Tripleheader alongside Western New York's Division I teams. Daemen (5-6, 3-0 ECC) trailed by as much as 12 points but eventually suffered their fourth loss by seven points or less this season. The Wildcats close the pre-Christmas portion of their season by visiting UDC Monday.

District of Columbia: The Firebirds moved to 3-9 (2-1 ECC) by splitting a pair of games last week. UDC lost by one point to Frostburg St. before rebounding with a win over D'Youville. The Firebirds host Daemen tonight before returning on December 30 with a road trip to Philadelphia to take on Holy Family. 

D'Youville: The Saints went 0-3 last week to move to 1-11 (0-4 ECC) on the season. D'Youville is now off until January 8 when they host Daemen.

Mercy: The Mercy College men's basketball team went 0-2 on the week with losses to Roberts Wesleyan and Bridgeport. The Mavericks were led by junior Brandon Wilson who averaged a team-high 22.5 points per game. Mercy resumes action on Thursday, December 30th when they play at Nyack at 6 p.m.

Molloy: Molloy went 0-2 on the week against both Queens College (76-68) and Bloomfield (73-62). The Lions will close out the calendar year on December 30 against Adelphi at 7:00 p.m. from Rockville Centre. 

Queens: Queens needed overtime to defeat Molloy to pick up their first conference win of the season. The Knights will be off until January 5th when they travel to Dobbs Ferry to take on Mercy College

Roberts Wesleyan: Roberts Wesleyan went 1-1 last week with a win over Mercy and a loss to St. Thomas Aquinas to move to 4-5 (2-2 ECC) on the season. The Redhawks are now off until they resume ECC play on January 5 when they host Staten Island. 

Staten Island: The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team was back on their home floor last Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup with the Felician University Golden Falcon, they lost 90-60. The Dolphins then played D'Youville on Sunday night where they beat the Saints by a score of 96-62. The Dolphins do not play again until the new year.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (10-3, 3-0 ECC) went 2-0 last week, defeating Bridgeport 97-74 and Roberts Wesleyan 94-87. STAC returns to action, closing out 2021, against Saint Rose on Dec. 30 (2:00 p.m.), before facing Jefferson on Jan. 2 (2:00 p.m.).
