ECC Women's Soccer Report - Week One

Offensive Player of the Week
Sarah Tappeto, Molloy (So, B - Merrick, N.Y.)
Tappeto netted the game-winning goal in the Lions' 1-0 double-overtime win over Bentley Friday, September 3.

 

Defensive Player of the Week
Jackie Carty, Molloy (Sr, GK - East Islip, N.Y.)
Carty registered back-to-back shutouts to start the season. The senior made seven saves in Molloy's win over Bentley and four saves in the team's 1-0 victory over Stonehill.

 

Rookie of the Week
Jillian Bernas, D'Youville (Fr, F/M - Cheektowaga, N.Y.)
Bernas scored in her collegiate debut and opened the season scoring for the Saints. Her goal tied the game in the 42nd minute in the Saints' overtime loss to Nyack.

 

ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Nikki Bermudez, Mercy (Sr, M/F - Oceanside, N.Y.)
Bermudez scored the game-winning goal in her Mercy debut in the Mavericks 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut State on Friday.

Alyssa Diaz, Daemen (Fr, D - Rochester, N.Y.)

In Daemen's 3-1 loss to Goldey-Beacom on Sept. 4, Diaz scored her first career goal as a Wildcat in the 65th minute of play. This was one of her three shots on goal she recorded in the span of Daemen's two games versus Wilmington (Del.) and GBC. By scoring, Diaz became the first Daemen freshman to score in a contest since teammate Madita Zeitz recorded the Wildcats' final goal in the 72nd minute of a 5-0 victory versus D'Youville on April 17, 2021.

Colleen Stevens, St. Thomas Aquinas (Jr, GK - Ellenville, N.Y.)
Stevens had a solid performance in a 5-0 loss to Franklin Pierce University to open the 2021 season for St. Thomas Aquinas. Despite missing five players due to injury, Stevens kept the visiting Ravens to only one goal in the first half of the match and finished the game with 16 total saves.

Melissa Torres, Mercy (Sr, GK - La Mirada, Calif.)
Torres went 1-0-1 in goal for the Mavericks with nine saves and no goals allowed in 200 minutes of action. The senior opened the season with two saves in the shutout win over Southern Connecticut State on Friday. Torres ended the week with seven saves to post another shutout in Mercy's 0-0 tie with AIC on Sunday.

ECC Team Notes

Bridgeport: The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team opened the 2021 season by splitting two matches at the 2021 UB Women's Soccer Invitational, as the Purple Knights fell to Southern New Hampshire, 2-1, and blanked Southern Connecticut State, 1-0. Andrea Bascilicato and Leigh-Ann Ramsey have each netted one goal for UB. Freshman goalkeeper Clara Karlsson has made 13 saves in the two matches. This week, the Purple Knights host Goldey-Beacom on Friday and Dominican (NY) on Sunday.

Daemen: Team went 0-2 this past weekend to Wilmington, Del. to kick off the 2021 campaign... Lost in the season opener at Wilmington, 2-0, on Sept. 3... Rounded out road trip with 3-1 loss at Goldey-Beacom on Sept. 4... Daemen trailed 2-0 at halftime before freshman Alyssa Diaz scored her first career goal as a Wildcat in the 65th minute against the Lightning... Junior Faye Panagopoulos was credited with the assist... Junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi recorded a combined 13 saves in the two contests, including seven against Wilmington... Daemen women's soccer returns home to Amherst, NY looking for their first win of the season hosting the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. at Karrer Field.

D'Youville: Saints fell in 2OT to Nyack on Thursday ... Jillian Bernas & Maggie Leeds scored ...Leeds also assisted on Bernas's goal ... Junior goalkeeper Laurie Poeller made eight saves

Lincoln: Lincoln's schedule season opener was postponed due to inclement weather. The Lions will now kick off their 2021 campaign on Friday, September 10 when they host Bloomfield. 

Mercy: The Mercy College women's soccer team went 1-0-1 on the week with a win over Southern Connecticut State on Friday and a tie against AIC on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by senior Melissa Torres who had nine saves without allowing a goal. Graduate student Nikki Bermudez scored the game-winning goal in the win over Southern Connecticut on Friday. Mercy resumes action on Thursday, September 9th when they play at Adelphi at 7 p.m.

Molloy: Molloy went 2-0 during the opening weekend. The Lions beat Bentley, 1-0, Friday, September 3, and Stonehill, 1-0, Sunday, September 5. In the win over the Falcons, sophomore Sarah Tappeto netted the game-winner in double overtime, and senior Jackie Carty made seven saves. Junior Sienna Nicoloich scored in the 89th minute, and Carty made four saves for her second shutout of the season against the Skyhawks.

Queens: Women's soccer season gets going with a trip to Philadelphia with a nightcap matchup against the Chestnut Hill College Griffins. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. On Sunday the Knights travel to North Easton, Massachusetts as they go up against Stonehill College Skyhawks at 11 a.m.

Roberts Wesleyan: The Roberts women's soccer team started the season with a pair of losses by one goal a piece in each game. The Redhawks fell to Saint Michael's on the road 1-0 and then took Nyack to double overtime but eventually lost 2-1. Roberts will host Malone University and Chestnut Hill this week.

Staten Island: The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team fell to the Yellow Jackets of American International College (AIC), 4-0, in their season opener at the University of Bridgeport Soccer Classic in Connecticut. The Dolphins then fell short to non-conference Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), 4-0, on Sunday, September 5th. The losses dropped the Dolphins to 0-2. Next up, the Dolphins host Felician, tomorrow at 3 p.m., and then go back on the road Saturday at Southern Connecticut St.  

St. Thomas Aquinas: The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 5-0 in their 2021 season opener last week. The Spartans will travel to Nyack College on September 9 for a 1:30 p.m. contest and then return to Spartan Field to face Bloomfield College on September 12 with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
