Women's Volleyball Opens ECC Play with a Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball swept St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-0 on Saturday during homecoming weekend and the first home match of the season.
 
The Redhawks had a balanced attack with seven players getting kills, including five players with at least five kills in the match. Sydney Yanak led the way with nine kills to go along with a team-leading 15 digs. Olivia Price and Morgan Verbridge added eight kills and Laura Amaya had seven kills.
 
Celine Malosa was a force on both the offensive and defensive end, registering six kills and six blocks.
 
Caleigh Schroeder had 34 assists, nine digs, five service aces and two kills.
 
1st Set (25-9)
 
Roberts dominated the first set and used a six-point run to grab a 14-3 lead over the Spartans. Verbridge and Yanak both had back-to-back kills during the offensive outburst. The Redhawks totaled 15 kills on 29 attacks in the set for a .414 hitting percentage.
 
2nd Set (25-14)
 
Midway through the set the Redhawks again used a huge offensive run to keep STAC on their heels. Three service aces by Schroeder helped spur a seven-point run to give Roberts a 19-9 lead. For the second straight set the Redhawks defense forced the Spartans into a negative hitting percentage.
 
3rd Set (25-22)
 
In the closest set of the day, Roberts had to rally from three-point deficit to claim the set and the match. STAC scored five straight points to take a 16-13 lead, but Roberts answered with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 17-17. The Redhawks then closed the match out with a 5-1 run finished by a kill from Verbridge.

Roberts (4-6, 1-0 ECC) will be right back at it as the team hosts Mercy on Sunday at noon in the Voller Athletic Center.
