
Sparkill, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Volleyball (1-3) was defeated in three sets by Assumption University (3-0) on Sunday afternoon at Aquinas Hall. Jaizahir Marrero-George led the Spartans attack with 13 kills while Aurivette Santos Bonilla came off the bench as a libero to post a team-high 18 digs.
How it Happened
Set 1:
- STAC jumped out to an 11-5 lead, before Assumption rattled off six straight points to tie the score at 11-11.
- Tied at 13-13, the visiting Greyhounds put up seven of the next nine points to take a 20-15 lead.
- The Spartans were able to get within two late (24-22) in the opening set, before Assumption closed things out with a kill by Anna Dean to win 25-22.
Set 2:
- Assumption opened the new set with a 3-1 advantage, but STAC would rally back to knot things at 3-3.
- The Spartans grabbed the lead on two occasions (4-3 and 8-7). However, it would be short-lived, as the visiting Greyhounds pushed the tempo and quickly earned a 22-13 advantage.
- Three straight points by the maroon and gold cut the deficit to six at 22-16 and put the set within reach.
- Unfortunately, three consecutive points by Assumption closed out the middle set, 25-16.
Set 3:
- In the final set, STAC opened with a 3-1 advantage of their own, but it was quickly snuffed out by the Greyhounds, who recorded four straight points to put themselves ahead 5-3.
- Back and forth play between the squads kept the set within reach, as the Spartans only trailed by three (13-10) at one point.
- The powerful offense of Assumption, combined with key mistakes by a young St. Thomas Aquinas team, would quickly put the visitors ahead by seven, 20-13.
- A final 5-3 run by the Greyhound, capped by a service ace by Sophia Kane, not only closed out the set, 25-16, but end the match with a 3-0 shutout for Assumption.
Inside the Box Score
- Jaizahir Marrero-George (37), Natassia Romanoff (25), Dahiana Garcia Atuesta (20) and Lorielys Ruiz (10) all recorded double-digit total attacks in the match.
- Lea Venghaus recorded a match-high 24 serve assists, giving her 96 on the young season.
