Sapia Leads Spartans to Sweep Over Bloomfield

Sparkill, N.Y. - Nyla Sapia drove home the winning run in the first game and hit her first collegiate home run in the second game to help St. Thomas Aquinas College register 1-0 and 6-2 wins over Bloomfield College today in non-conference softball action at Spartan Field.

Sapia, a sophomore, enjoyed her best day as a college player. In the first game, her infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in freshman DeAnna DeCaro to score the deciding run. The run made a winner of lefty Carissa Della Vecchia, who pitched another outstanding game for the Spartans. She upped her record to 12-3 with eight strikeouts while allowing only two hits. Freshman teammate Eliana Raposo starred defensively in centerfield with a sliding catch and an excellent throw to third base to put out a runner.

In the second game, the Spartans scored four runs in the first inning and that was all that winning pitcher Abbie Landrum needed. The sophomore righthander limited Bloomfield to six hits and posted nine strikeouts. She helped her own cause with an RBI double in the first-inning rally and DeCaro followed with a two-run single. Sapia's home run over the left field fence provided two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Tara Hagan (first base) and Elyse Marcano (second base) excelled with their gloves.

STAC, now 21-14-1, next hosts D'Youville University on Saturday (April 22) in an ECC twinbill that is scheduled to start at noon. Bloomfeld fell to 12-31.
