STAC Sweeps Mercy to Open ECC Play

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Emilie Olivier and Eliana Raposo homered to lead a 22-run attack that carried St. Thomas Aquinas College to a doubleheader sweep over host Mercy College today in East Coast Conference softball action. STAC won by the scores of 11-2 and 11-1.

The doubleheader marked the opening of the ECC season for STAC and lifted its overall record to 9-7. Mercy fell to 0-2 in the conference and 5-19 overall.

Raposo's homer, her second of the season, evened the scored at 1-1 in the fourth inning and ignited the STAC offense. Freshman DeAnna DeCaro followed with a two-run double in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 4-1 and the Spartans broken open the game with a six-run outburst in the fifth inning. Fellow freshman Adriana Coira (two-run single) and Elyse Marcano (RBI single) keyed the rally.

Raposo finished with two hits and three runs scored while Coira, Marcano, DeCaro and Sarah Williams added two hits each. Sophomore Abbie Landrum pitched effectively to notch her fourth win and received excellent defensive support from Amanda Demmerle in left field.

In the second game, STAC used five-run rallies in the first and fifth innings to aid winning pitcher Carissa Della Vecchia. Tara Hagan's first of two doubles drove in two runs to spark the surge and Landrum, Raposo and DeCaro. Olivier's long three-run round tripper was the big hit in the fifth inning. Hagan and Raposo had two hits each and Olivier finished with four RBIs.
 
Della Vecchia struck out 11 to up her record to 5-2.
