WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team got back in the win column on Wednesday, defeating another tough East Region opponent in the District of Columbia, 6-1, at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

After dropping the first match of the season over the weekend, the Wildcats got back to play in the East Region, defeating UDC, a team that advanced to the Regional Tournament a season ago. The Wildcats are now 17-1 overall.

Wednesday started with another doubles point won by the Wildcats. Fenna Swaan and Carmelle Vial started the match with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and then Neus Ramos Moreno and Jess Purdy gave the Wildcats the point with a win at No. 1, 6-2. The Firebirds were able to take the third match, 7-6 (7-5), but the Wildcats still led, 1-0, going into singles play.

Neus Ramos Moreno was the first Wildcats to finish on the singles court, winning at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-2, for the 2-0 lead. UDC got on the board with a win at No. 4 singles, but then it was all Wilmington after that.

Carmelle Vial made it 3-1 with a win at No. 1 singles, 7-5 and 6-3, and then Larize Nel gave the Wildcats the victory with a win at No. 6 singles, 6-2 and 6-4. Jess Purdy made it 5-1 with a win at No. 2 singles, battling from behind to win in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, and 6-1. Marley Trifunovic also came back from losing the first set, 4-6, fighting back to take the match, 6-4, in the second and 10-6 in the third set tiebreaker.

The Wildcats will now travel to Syracuse, New York, for their next match on Saturday. They will play at Le Moyne in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament 1 Final.
