Della Vecchia Strikes Out 13 in 1-0 Shutout of D'Youville

Sparkill, N.Y. - Adriana Coira's squeeze bunt scored Elyse Marcano in the bottom of the seventh inning and Carissa Della Vecchia fanned 13 batters in St. Thomas Aquinas College's 1-0 win over D'Youville University today in the first game of an East Coast Conference softball game at Spartan Field. D'Youville won the second game, 1-0.

Della Vecchia turned in another masterful performance in the circle. The lefty permitted only one hit and faced the minimum 21 batters because the lone batter who reached safety was thrown out at second base trying to stretch a single into a double. She is now ranked sixth among 600 pitchers nationally in the NCAA Division II circuit in strikeouts per seven innings with 10.4. She leads the ECC with her 13-3 record, 169 strikeouts and 1.50 earned run average.

The Spartans pushed across the winning run when Marcano led off with a double down the left field line. Amanda Demmerle's successful sacrifice bunt moved her to third base and Coira's squeeze bunt plated the winner. Elyse Raposo starred defensively with an outstanding catch in deep center field and teammate DeAnna DeCaro added a triple.

Lauren Booth held STAC to one hit in the second game to even her pitching record at 8-8. Hannah Bardeen drove in the winning run with a long double.

STAC's split pushed its overall record to 22-15-1 and 9-4-1 in the ECC while DYU finished the day at 15-23 overall and 9-7 in the conference. STAC next travels to the College of Staten Island on Sunday (April 23) for an ECC twinbill that begins at 2 p.m.
