Della Vecchia Strikes Out 14 in 6-2 Win Over Mercy

Sparkill, N.Y. - Carissa Della Vecchia struck out 14 batters and Eliana Raposo homered to pace St. Thomas Aquinas College to a 6-2 win over visiting Mercy College today in the second game of an East Coast Conference doubleheader at Spartan Field. Mercy won the first game, 3-1.

Della Vecchia, the lefty graduate student, recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts on the way to her 11th win in 14 decisions. She surrendered only four hits and did not walk a batter to lower her earned run average to 1.71. Raposo, a freshmen, was the team's offensive star with four hits including her second homner of the season in the sixth inning. She also doubled in the third inning and then stole home on the back end of a double steal play.

Mercy rode the pitching of Alexi Benson to the win in the first game. She allowed only four hits and registered four strikeouts. Mercy scored single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings off of STAC's pitcher Abbie Landrum, who pitched well. She also homered and doubled to lead the offense while teammate Emilie Olivier doubled off the wall.

The split moved STAC to 19-14-1 overall and 8-3-1 in ECC play. Mercy is 11-27 overall and 6-8 in the conference. STAC next hosts Bloomfield College on Thursday (April 20) in a non-conference doubleheader that starts at 2:30 p.m.
