Spartans Earn Road Doubleheader Sweep at Queens

Queens, N.Y. - The strong pitching of Carissa Della Vecchia, Abbie Landrum and Eliana Raposo powered St. Thomas Aquinas College to 3-0 and 7-1 wins over host Queens College today in an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader.

The sweep pushed STAC's overall record to 14-9 and 7-2 in the conference. Queens slipped to 6-22 overall and 3-5 in the ECC.

In the first game, lefthander Carissa Della Vecchia tossed a shutout with 11 strikeouts while surrendering only five hits and one walk. Defensively, catcher Emilie Olivier and center fielder Eliana Raposo teamed to pick off a runner at second base to highlight the defense. Sarah Williams also played well at third base.

Freshmen Adriana Coira drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and fellow freshman Elyse Marcano added a single and a run scored.

Landrum and Raposo combined to throw a five hitter in the second game. Coira starred defensively at shortstop by turning two double plays while teammates Emilee Mayer (right field) and Marcano (second base) also sparkled with their gloves.

The Spartans used three-run rallies in the second and sixth innings to pace the offense. Coira had run-scoring singles in both innings. Nyla Sapia doubled off the centerfield wall and Amanda Demmerle and Marcano also played well offensively.

STAC next hosts Alliance University on Tuesday (April 11) in a non-conference doubleheader that starts at 2:30 p.m.
