Flushing, N.Y. (3/31/23) The Dominican University New York softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Queens College this afternoon.
After the split, the Lady Chargers now hold an overall record of 5-21.
Game One: The Lady Chargers won the opener in comeback fashion by scoring the tying run in the top of the seventh inning and then adding the go ahead run in the eighth inning.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Rebecca Haggery (Grafton, Mass.) reached base after a hit by pitch. Emma Kaszovitz (Hicksville, N.Y.) pinch ran for Haggerty and Haylee Redmond Ridge (Bellflower, Calif.) followed with a single.
A sacrifice bunt by Emily Angulo (Wilmington, Calif.) moved the runners into scoring position. Chloe McIntosh (Menifee, Calif.) delivered the RBI-single that brought home the tying run.
The score remained tied and was sent into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Madison Walker (Southampton, N.J.) flew out to move the go ahead run to third base. Giovanna Salcido (Diamond Bar, Calif.) brought home the go ahead run with a sac fly to give Dominican the 2-1 lead.
The Knights rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning but the Lady Chargers held on to secure the win in game one.
Emily Baxter (Bucoda, WA) started on the mound for Dominican and surrendered one run over 3.2 innings of work and recorded three strikeouts. Kamryn Raya (Corona, Calif.) entered in relief and pitched a solid 4.1 innings and recorded her first win of the season.
Game Two: The Knights bounced back in game two and earned a split with Dominican after the 3-1 victory.
Ann Grimshaw put the Knights on the board with an RBI-groundout in the third inning.
The Lady Chargers answered in the fourth inning when Haylee Redmond Ridge drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly.
The Knights added one run in the fourth inning after an RBI-double by Kristina Verruso and then Dani Roselli extended the lead with an RBI-double in the fifth inning.
The Knights held Dominican to no runs over the next two innings to secure the win.
The Lady Chargers will return to action and return to conference play on the road on Tuesday, April 4th for a doubleheader with Bloomfield College.
