Wildcats Cap Off Tony Banner Memorial Tournament With 3-1 Win Over Lake Erie

CLARION, PA – The Daemen University women's volleyball team won their final match of the weekend at the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament on Saturday, beating Lake Erie College 3-1 (25-9, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19) to round out the tournament with a 2-2 record. 

The Wildcats won their second match of the weekend on Saturday afternoon, topping the Storm 3-1 in their final match of the weekend. Freshman Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) led the Wildcats to victory with 15 of the team's 51 total kills in the game.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • For the third straight day, Koerber led the Wildcats offensively with a match-high 15 kills (3.75 kills/set). The freshman outside hitter added a match-high with 14 digs along with 6 aces.
  • Senior Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) contributed to the Wildcats' win against the Storm on Saturday, adding 8 kills with just one error on the day. The outside hitter added 1 assist and 1 dig, also.
  • Senior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) added a team-high 17 assists and 7 digs to help the Wildcats to victory.
  • Junior right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) put up 11 kills with just 2 errors, with a hitting percentage of .562%.
  • Senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) tallied 13 assists, 3 digs and an ace.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen took the first set 25-9 by capitalizing on Lake Erie's 11 errors, with a .412 hitting percentage.
  • The second set was a game of runs for each team. The Storm added 15 kills to compete with Daemen's 5, but they could not keep up with the Wildcats' aggressive offense, with 30 attack attempts which help propel them to a second set victory 25-14.
  • The Storm seemed to control most of the third set, capturing the victory 21-25. The Storm led the set in kills (14) and hitting percentage (.273).
  • The Wildcats kept the foot on the gas throughout the fourth set, taking the match with a 25-19 win to secure the game.
  • Daemen out-killed (51-28), and out-aced (11-4) Lake Erie College, and finished the match hitting .239.
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen was picked first in the East Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll for the second straight season. The Wildcats are victors of two consecutive ECC regular season and ECC Tournaments.
  • The Wildcats open the 2023 season with three straight tournaments, starting with this weekend's Tony Banner Memorial Tournament. Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend (Sept. 8-9) to host the Wildcat Den Classic, then heads to Long Island for the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament (Sept. 15-16)
TOURNAMENT ACCOLADES 
Seniors Giselle Giraud and Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) earned All-Tournament honors for their performances in the tournament.

The Wildcats continue non-conference play on Friday, September 8 against the Vulcans of California (PA) at 6 PM in Lumsden Gymnasium at the Wildcat Den Classic.
